wow, very nice!! how big is he? can you get a top down pic? such a beautiful border ( lack of better word ) on his mantle

i am currently eyeing a dersa at my LFS, he just got 10 or so in.

that’s a nice looking clam. at the lfs that i go to they have a large show tank with two enormous clams in there as well as a couple little guys 4". since i started looking into going into the hobby i wanted to get a clam but i think my tank is to small. there are only the three kinds right, or at least they are the most popular?

there are loads of different clams but the kind kept by most reefers are tridacnid: crocea, squamosa, maxima, hippopus ( haven't personally seen or heard of anyone keeping ), dersa and gigas. ( listed from smallest to biggest ) and they range in size at maturity from 6" to 48"

yeah but not as big as a giga or a dersa. squamies and maximas get about 12" or so ( obviously some get bigger and some are smaller ).

i was just at the LFS and they only one or two dersa's left, i may have some new pics coming

I jst picked one up last night. No picture- I'm on the road.
It is kinda a orange color with a little blue at the end of the mantle. THe only problem is under my T5 lights, it just looks brown.

Is that normal mantle extension on a T. derasa? I got one a week or so ago and he is on my sandbed directly under T5's(216watt) about 18'' from the bulbs and thats about as far as he extends his mantel, he is a very nice brown/tan color with a deep blue border. I just keep reading about other clams hyper-extending their mantles.

hyper-extending is actually a bad thing, it means your clam is starving for light. i would say this is normal extension for a dersa but they do vary. generally a dersa extends just past the margin, some a little more and some a little less. there is no exact specification.

Oh yes i agree completely that hyper-extending is a bad thing. I was just trying to gauge how mine was doing, the mantle on mine seems to extend out to the sides but not a whole lot up.
