Prepare yourselves...this could get long.
I managed to get a new 24G NanoCube for $2 (raffle ticket). I have been looking at this thing for a while now and it is time to set it up or sell it. Here are the problems that I see.
1. Back compartment is too small for a fuge.:thumbdown
2. The back compartment can't be lit with the stock hood so a light would have to be "duct taped" to the back to light a fuge that is too small.:thumbdown
3. HOB skimmers can't be added with the stock hood.:thumbdown
4. "NanoCube specific" skimmers are $$$$ and take up room in a fuge that is too small.:thumbdown
5. Adding MH's to the stock hood, that will not work with HOB skimmers, are $$$$.:thumbdown
Soooooo, here is what I am thinking.
1. I build a custom hood that will hold MH's and ditch the stock hood. Now my HOB skimmer will fit on this tank.
2. Drill the tank, which I doubt is possible, and put everything in a sump. Keep the hood and add MH's.
3. Hack the back divider out and build a new fuge with more room for pumps, cheato, and descent baffles. The tank is plenty deep enough to move the divider.
The custom hood is not a real big deal for me. It takes a weekend in the garage and a little nagging from my wife.:thumbdown I have all the components, except a MH bulb, as my 20 was going to get new lights soon.
The sump is the best option but I will NOT put in a siphon overflow. So if no drill, no sump.
I reality, the only thing that is making me want to keep this tank is the curved corners on glass. Acrylic tanks are not for me. Been there scratched that. If not for this, I would have sold this tank and ordered a custom tank, drilled and ready to go.
Now for the questions.
Can it be drilled?
Is there a local source for black acrylic at a reasonable price?
Is it really worth it to mod out or just go with a custom tank?
Anyone in the market for a new 24G Nano?
