My newest project

Over last weekend I built a stand and canopy for a 33 cube that I will be downsizing too. I am pretty proud of how it turned out especially since this is my first attempt at building a piece of furniture. I made one boo-boo, I did not make the canopy long enough to cover the trim of the tank. I will have to come up with something to remedy it.

Here are a couple of pics.

This is before I stained and finished it. The top left tank will be a refugium. There will be a tank directly below it that will be a topoff resevoir and the tank on the right will be the sump. I will drill the refugium so it will drain into the sump.

This is it all finished and in its final resting place.

I plan to start moving stuff over in the next week or so and I will then have stuff to sale when I figure out what will be going to the new setup.

Sweet Jimmy. What are the inside and outside dimensions of the stand? I may be going to try something similar in the next few months. Y are you downsizing?

We're downsizing mainly for room, and some of the expense. The inside dimensions are 21.5W x 20.5D, just big enough to fit 2 10g tanks side by side between the 2x4 uprights. The outside dimensions are 26W x 21.25D x 36H. I used 3/4" oak ply to skin the stand and 1/2" for the canopy and the stand door.

Just wondering where you found your hinges for the door? I also just recently built my first stand for my new 240 gallon fish only tank, but I couldn't find hinges like that. The only ones I could find at Lowes were the outdoor type hinges. I am sure I was just looking in the wrong place.

If you want to fix the canopy so it fits better just add some trim around the bottom of the canopy the size you need it. Then cover any spaces between the canopy and the trim with 1/4 round trim (very cheap at HD or Lowes). Then do the same thing to the top (if you want) and it will look like a design element. For the trim you would use 1x3's or 2x2's or something like that. You could even run it through a router with a round over bit or something and get rounded edges. For your first project, you did a great job.

Here it is completely finished. I am extremely happy with the way it turned out. I moved everything over yesterday and this picture is about an hour old. I was surprised at the amount of rock I used. I was thinking I would use about half of my 130lbs, but I only have 40 or 50 pounds left after moving everything.

I will be making a post of what I have for sale a little later this evening.
