So do I have a weird Sea Hare or is this normal?

As I found out he is a Sea Hare : Dolabella auricularia .

He isn't touching any of my HA http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=786773 (I believe to be bropsis (sp) ) and he is used to the tank as he crawls around everywhere and doesnt seemed stressed at all BUT I just noticed him sticking his head and body in the sand leaving his butt sticking out!

What a strange Sea Hare!!! :eek2:

Is this at all normal? I've never had a Sea Hare other than this one but didn't think they did this....whats up!?

Here he is...howl at the moon! :fun5:

(other pics of him normally at the above link)

That is kind-of strange. My sea-hare use to hide (gave it away) in the mornings, but was almost always "on-the-go". The BEST algae remover I have ever had!!! If it was green, it was gone!! Never bothered coral, fish, ect. Loved it, but ate SOOOO much algae my tank became too clean.

How long have you had it?? Did you acclimate it well??

I've had him for about a week now, and acclimated him slowly for almost 2hrs. (like all my inverts).

He hasn't seemed stressed at all (unluss him burying most of himself in the sand is a sign of stress???) and roams freely around the tank, up the sides and along the botom of the tank.

He's eating, just not HA. He eats like my snails, off seemingly barren rock and algae of the glass but not HA! (like my lawnmower blenny doesn't :( )

Hasn't inked and seems active.

It's strange huh?

Maybe its this species of sea hare (Dolabella auricularia )...any input anyone (why he sticks his head in the substrate and doesn't eat the HA?)

I am actually getting another sea hare from live aquaria; this guy: Aplysia

Is that the one you have tanker?

I just used the same species of sea hare to fix my tank.He is "borrowed" around the area to clean tanks. The one I had was completely nocturnal, and he ate anything green.I could even hand feed him algea. What is going on with yours is a mystery to me.Maybe there is something that he is digging for under the substrate.Did you recently cover up some algea? And,he is trying to reach it?I don't know.Give him some more time, maybe he will come around.

This is exaactly the one I have (had). Just like your pics. He ate all algae..

giant: No its almost as if he were sleeping under the sand, he stayed their all night and just got up and is moving around again!? (now that the lights are on!)

There wasnt anything buried in the sand (that I know of) but there is a big rock that has tons of HA on it which he has crawled by but didn't touch!?

Tanker: the one I currently have is a sea hare is but species: Dolabella auricularia

The one I am ordering from live aquaria is the Alypsia (which is pictured in your reply) So I hope the new one coming in will clean up like its supposed to.

Only thing I can think of is a different species eating and acting differently.....?????

Your guess is as good as mine. I have only had that one kind. :)

when my lights came on today i was looking for the sea hare i got from jeffs on wed. much to my surprise he was buried in the sand exactly like the one in your picture. where did you get yours from?

I got mine from Tat's in Thousand Oaks. Showed them a pic of the Alypsia from LiveAquaria and they said its the same....but its not; it's still a sea hare but different species.

I am ordering a Sea Hare (an Alypsia) from live aquaria which should come in on Tues. They are the common ones everyone talks about....hope its not a hit or miss like lawnmower blennys though...my current one won't touch any HA but I had one before that would always fill up his belly with it!

I had a dolabella and he was a HA eating machine!! He'd hide during the day but every morning you could see his progress!!

I must have a very strange dolabella then...cause he moves around during the day, hides at night and doesnt touch the HA...grrrrrr :p
