MY skimmer sometimes skims?

as I understand it, skimmers need a constant level of sh!te to be skimming constantly, once they have taken all the cr@p out, there's nothing left to remove, until it builds up again.
this is why an underskimmed tank will constantly produce a level of skimmate, but an overskimmed tank wont

another reason? you have your skimmer in a sump which doesn't have a constant water-level, and the level varies in the contact chamber.

for me the problem is caused by the water level in my sump not staying the same (I don't have auto top-off). My expensive skimmer is either over-producing very watery skinmate--I'll have to empty it twice in a day--and when the sump level drops, the skimmer only produces a 1/4" skinmate in a day. It's very frustrating.

It is in a sump and I have a ball valve to keep the water level the same no matter what the level in the sump I also do a ten gallon water change once a weak on a 50 gallon system. thank you so much for your help hahnmeister.

Does this "some days there is something to skim..." variable also affect whether you'll get wet or drier skinmate? Or is that determined more by how your skimmer is set up?
