My struggles

Hi, I have been struggling to keep my ph at 7.8 between using a CO2 scrubber and daily water changes with my apex and a dos. I just changed the CO2 media and I get an average of about 7.7 with my ph. The only thing I haven't done is open my window to let fresh air in. I am really tired of chasing the ph, but my acropora frag is brown right now. I am not sure if it is the ph or the lighting. I am using 2 radion g3 pros over my 90 gallon tank. I just changed the intensity from 60 to 70 percent. I am using the zeovit system as well to reduce nutrients in my water and I have algae growing in my tank. I feel very frustrated with my tank right now. The acro is the only thing that is doing badly at the moment. I have had it for a little over a month now. I bought a small frag just in case it died so I don't lose too much money. I was trying to see how long it survived.

I have low ph as well and use a CO2 scrubber with my skimmer and Kalkwasser in my ATO, both of those do the trick for me.

Not sure how you fix the problem but CO2 lowers PH. The amount it lowers depends on your water hardness.

Current tank specs

Current tank specs

my alk is 8, magnesium 1330, calcium is around 520. I use kent salt. I also use RODI water in my tank and zeovit so there shouldn't be any algae, but there is loads of it again. I also use a CO2 scrubber and kalk in my auto top off and I still struggle with ph. My ph is at 7.74 right now according to my apex.

The calcium level seems a bit high to me. I would not really sweat the pH that much. The last time I checked mine it was around 7.8, that was a year or so ago.

Algae growing with browning SPS, high phosphates?

Do you run a refugium? If I have read correctly, if you run a refuge light opposite of your DT lights, it will help to stabilize the PH at night.

I run a 29 gal nano and had some knarly hair algae starting to grow on the back wall at one point so I changed out my chemi pure elite and with-in a week it was all gone. I added the fuge basket and some cheato. For the first 3 weeks I would have to cut it in half and around the start of the 4th week till now (about 8+ weeks into it) I have undetectable nitrate levels and Im harvesting cheato every 2-3 weeks now. Recently replaced the chemipure elite bag since I started to notice the algae coming back. It had grown all over one of my powerheads and severely reduced the flow. I replaced it and the chemipure and its looking alot better after about a week. Hair algae seems to have gone away and the spot of cyano I had on a rock is gone.

Before I did all this, I couldnt keep any SPS, they all STN or whatever, browned out and died.

Ive got a montipora cap that is exploding in size now and some other acro that is starting to bounce back and grow. I had left it in there as an indicator to see if my water quality was getting better or not. It started to sprout and is now coloring back up nicely.

Oh yeah, I havent done a water change in almost 6 weeks. Im kinda scared my mag/cal/KH levels have droped as I havent been dosing anything. Keeping a reef with a newborn and 2 year old is kinda hard lol. BUT, all LPS coral (torches, hammer, frogspawn) are all doing great and keep on growing and sprouting new heads. I have some palys (not sure what kind) but they are great indicators of my tanks water quality. I guess, if you can learn to read what your corals like you can tell when something is off when they are ****ed.

If you have algae growing, I would say you have too much phosphates and/or nitrates.

Good luck!

My setup

My setup

No I don't run a refugium. I have a zeovit setup. It is supposed to be a low nutrient system so there is no need for trying to grow macro algae. I don't have a light over my sump right now either. I have an apex system that does automatic water changes as well. Every time I test for phosphates it is 0. My nitrates usually test at 0 or .25 with the red sea nitrate pro test. My nitrates spiked about a week ago to 5ppm. I am not sure why that happened, but I added bacteria to the water to eat the nitrates. I am not exactly sure why I have algae in my tank. It's a mystery.

I wouldn't chase PH if i were you. It's not a huge issue in saltwater form many articles that I have red.

My PH varies between 7.8-8.3 depending on the time of day. Your alk seems a little low and your calcium seem a little high.

What kind of flow do you have in your tank? If your having algae issues the nitrate and phosphate readings you are getting are false as the algae is absorbing them quickly.

What kind of skimate are you getting?

My tank ranges between 10-25 ppm of nitrates and I have no algae at all, phosphate is less than 0.03.

You can always try to get more ripples at the top of your tank to agitate the water surface and bring in more oxygen.

Lastly you can always try to hook up your skimmer air intake for fresh air. I did this and within a few hours my ph went up 3 points.
