my wife got a Red Spotted Sand Perch

...for my tank. She picked out this cute little guy on a trip to the local reef store. I was happy to have her take a more active interest/role in the tank. It turns out that this fish has much more personality than my others: a young clakrii pair and a pygmy angel. One of the more interesting behaviors is its habit of curling itself around a hermit crab. I am guessing this is a feeding strategy in the wild--waiting for the hermit to stir up some bits or an invert. Each of the three species of fish now respresnted in my tank have a very different swimming/feeding/behavior niche. Sure makes the tank more interesting.

Does anyone here know anything about the life history of this species? I am interested to here your experience.

Thanks in advance.

i have one and its a slob.. all it wants to do is eat.. its only about 2.5 to 3 inches and he has taken down whole silversides.. took him a couple bits but he'll do it.. other than that a very interesting fish.. i also have noticed the more meatier the foods offered the brighter the red gets..

Assuming it is Parapercis shauinslandii, then you have the best sandperch by far. They will greedily accept many foods, but planktonic type foods are the best for this species. Though it is not usually what this species will eat, I would make sure that you don't have any other fish small enough to be eaten.
