I bought an already established 54-gallon tank which has been set up at my house for two months (was up and running previously for a few years). Around the middle of January I picked up a CUC which included 4 Emerald Crabs.
Since that time, I've had two Emerald Crabs die and for no apparent reason - no signs of trauma, all legs intact, etc. No other losses in the tank at all, just those two crabs.
Tank parameters are all normal - runs 78 to 81 degrees F depending upon whether the lights are on or off, zero ammonia and nitrites at all times, nitrates typically stay under 5 ppm, pH is always stable at 8.4, salinity fluctuates between 32-35 ppt with evap and top-off. I feed the tank mysis every two or three days and then target-feed various species as appropriate.
Other tank inhabitants include a Pom Pom crab, two Pistol Shrimp, Nassarius / Cerith / Astrea snails, sand sifting cucumber, lettuce nudibranch, Ocellaris clown, Six-Line Wrasse, Mandarin, small shrimp goby, RBTA, and various soft & LPS corals.
Nobody else has even exhibited any signs of distress, and in fact everything else seems to be thriving. Could it just be old age?
I did notice one of the Emeralds has grown significantly bigger, so could it be a dominance thing? Or do I have a species conflict?
Thanks,
Sean
