Mystery wrasse compatabilty

I have had a mystery wrasse for about 3 months and would love to add another wrasse. I have tried a mcoskers flasher and it didn't end well for him. I have a 90g with a little of 100lbs of rock. Any suggestions? Tank mates are a purple tang, pair of percs and a fire fish. The purple is surprisingly passive.

Unfortunately Mystery can be very aggressive towards other wrasses. I had a one that completely destroyed all the fairy wrasses that was in the same tank. Is your tank a FOLWR or reef. Ifc it is a FOLWR, you could get away with the larger wrasses.

i never had any problems with mine when i have added any of the Macropharyngodon family. but my mystery wrasse is a big softy unlike most.

I have one with a melanus wrasse which is almost twice the size of the mystery and already in the tank for 8 months. Once the territory was established there have been no problems.

I have read mystery wrasses can be little devils! Do you have an acclimation box you could leave in the tank? Like this? If not, you may want to get one.

So you need reef safe or not?

Non reef safe I'd say try to find a Coris gaimard...sooo beautiful as a juvie and adult!

For reef safe species Halichoeres would be a good bet. That's what the melanurus listed above is.

Look at Halichoeres biocellatus, Halichoeres chrysus, Halichoeres cyanocephalus, Halichoeres iridis, Halichoeres melanurus

and/or from page 2

Halichoeres ornatissimus (Christmas wrasse, really beautiful! A pair is awesome!), Halichoeres vrolikii

Some Thalassoma's are really beautiful too:
Thalassoma lucasanum, Cortez Rainbow Wrasse

It all depends on the personality of the individual fish.

My Mystery Wrasse always picked on my Helfrichi when I first added it. Weeks later my female Maroon Clown decided it would hate the Mystery Wrasse after being buddy buddy for so long. Now the Mystery Wrasse ignores the Helfrichi and is buddy buddy with the male Maroon.

What strange shifts in disposition.

My mystery wrasse and scarlet wrasse were very aggressive towards eachother and had to be separated. Like Enyo says all fish are different, but I think in this case the odds are really against you. If it took on a flasher wrasse, I don't think I would try another.

Mine is a terror. He chases any new fish. Not sure who's the boss in my tank, my Mystery Wrasse or my Copperbanded BF.

I have a reef so must be reef safe. Thanks Korraine for the great suggestions. I really like the melanarus wrasse and might have to give it a try next. I was really disapointed about the McCosker's Flasher. I really enjoy those fish and got a heck of a deal on it.

You're welcome. If you do decide to try one of those wrasses go with a larger adult one. Be sure it's eating in the fish store since older ones sometimes don't adapt as well to captivity. Watch it for awhile, think an hour or so, and see how it acts. They should be alert, swimming around and possibly trying to forage. The melanurus is great for flat worms too.
