Mystery Wrasse

Does anyone have any experience with this fish and should it be the last fish added? Are they aggressive to newcomers if I decide to add additional fish?

I was looking at a long-nose hawk, some clown gobies, six line wrasse. My current inhabitants include a juvenile Emperor Angel, Sailfin Tang, Blond Naso Tang, Coral Beauty Angel, and a Magnificent Foxface. I can't imagine the Mystery wrasse would bother any of them, however I also don't want a 150-200 dollar investment jumping out of the tank.

I assume you are talking about the 5 bar/mystery wrasse. They can be very, very mean to crustaceans and conspecifics.

I had a very mean Six-line in my 90 gallon which took out newcomer clownfish. Are essentially all wrasse species aggressive? I know that unless you are adding two of the same species at the same time that there will be aggression. They are a gorgeous fish though. Am I to assume that my cleanup crew will be picked off? What about large cleaner shrimp?

All wrasses jump. If your tank is not covered they will eventually jump to the next tide pool. Six line wrasses can be tough customers with other wrasses although a mystery wrasse may stand up to it.

i dont think it'll jump out of your 180.
i had one in a 60 and it ended up in the overflow.....but survived.
my mystery was in my larger tank for about a month when i added a yellow wrasse and didnt seem to mind.
lovely fish.

From a behavior stand point I believe that a six line and mystery wrasse are very similar. I orginally was going to get a Mystery Wrasse then I read that they can be bullies.

I have had a mystery wrasse for three years and it has been nothing but a model citizen with my fairy wrasses. I grew it from a 1 1/2 inch fish to 3 1/2 inches. Believe it or not he is a little wuss. The male Flame wrasse and male Hooded wrasse keep him in check

My mystery wrasse for going on two years has never jumped from my open-topped tank and is a good citizen. About the only thing desirable I've caught him eating is a pistol shrimp, but, as moonpod pointed out, I expected that! I've caught him eating various worms and other "questionable" inhabitants, though, and really enjoy him!

I have two Mystery Wrasses in my 225. They initially fought with each other when the second was added but now live peacefully together. Anytime a fish smaller than the Mystery Wrasse is introduced, he gets a pretty rude welcoming for an hour or two. After that there is peace and quite.

I have seen both of mine try to eat turbos that get turned upside down.

In general they are great fish. They are incredibly hardy.
