Hi:
I am a bit of a noob, so I do not know if this is something all you already know about (probably), but I thought I would share.
My cube is not in the sun, and in a cooled room, but it was still hitting 82 by the end of the day. From lights, is my guess.
From under the hood, mark a dot at the center of one of the two fans; I marked the one over the intake. Then, I removed the lid, then the plasic light cover- easy, just 10 screws. Take the four screws out of that fan, and reverse it (it will now blow DOWN onto the water).
Now, with a small drill, make a starter hole at the mark you made previously. THIS IS IMPORTANT: GO SLOW! Your drill is probably for wood or metal- plastic is very soft by comparison. And too much heat (friction) will melt it into an ugly glob. Go as slow as you possibly can. AND USE LIGHT PRESSURE- no need to press hard. It may take a while, but slow is good here. (Have you seen the word "patience " a LOT in this hobby???)
Change out to a 1 1/2 to 2 inch borer, again go VERY SLOW, and drill down that pilot hole. I drilled half from one side, and then finished from the other- makes a cleaner-looking final hole. This hole now allows the fan to blow directly onto the top of your water.
Pop it all back on, and good to go.
Unlike a fan across the water, which drops a degree or so (acording to what I read here), my tank dropped to 77 (and then the heater kicked in).
Anyway, I thought you might like this mod!
Dave
