Nano Cooler Mod- NO COST!

Hi:

I am a bit of a noob, so I do not know if this is something all you already know about (probably), but I thought I would share.

My cube is not in the sun, and in a cooled room, but it was still hitting 82 by the end of the day. From lights, is my guess.

From under the hood, mark a dot at the center of one of the two fans; I marked the one over the intake. Then, I removed the lid, then the plasic light cover- easy, just 10 screws. Take the four screws out of that fan, and reverse it (it will now blow DOWN onto the water).

Now, with a small drill, make a starter hole at the mark you made previously. THIS IS IMPORTANT: GO SLOW! Your drill is probably for wood or metal- plastic is very soft by comparison. And too much heat (friction) will melt it into an ugly glob. Go as slow as you possibly can. AND USE LIGHT PRESSURE- no need to press hard. It may take a while, but slow is good here. (Have you seen the word "patience " a LOT in this hobby???)

Change out to a 1 1/2 to 2 inch borer, again go VERY SLOW, and drill down that pilot hole. I drilled half from one side, and then finished from the other- makes a cleaner-looking final hole. This hole now allows the fan to blow directly onto the top of your water.

Pop it all back on, and good to go.

Unlike a fan across the water, which drops a degree or so (acording to what I read here), my tank dropped to 77 (and then the heater kicked in).

Anyway, I thought you might like this mod!

That's a sweet quick fix.....good thinking. My temps in my NC24DX were getting up to 83 F until I replaced the stock pump with 2 MJ900s. Now my temps are ~80 F. Do you still run the stock pump? It puts out a lot of heat. I would consider changing it out for a MJ1200 or 2 MJ900s.

P.S. Snowbird rules!

I still use the stock pump in chamber 3, but added a Rio below the intake, and it throws water along the back wall. It is low, just abobe the sand, with the intake on top. The stream andles up across the back...

The temp change I sow above- down 4 degrees- is ONLy due to reversing that fan and adding the hole.

I will try to put an image up tonight.

carfac- this easy mod is a great fix for temp problems. a friend of mine added another 18W bulb to his NC6 hood so his temps were getting up to 83.5 and i told him about this mod and he did it yesterday. his temp already dropped to 80.
chris from nanocustoms.com says that they flip the fans on all of their modded hoods.
so i'm sold on this mod.
