It sure cant hurt thats for sure. It depend on a lot of things if you need one or not. What you are keeping, how much you feed exc.
But to each there own some people still think that you should keep running the bio balls and ceramic stuff in the back of a nano in stead of live rock. :lol:

carbon used properly is your best friend.
even if you dont "need" to skim, I like the gas exchange a skimmer provides with tanks that cant have too much flow.
