Nano Wrasses?

Apologies if this isn't the correct place to post, since most threads deal with tank builds.

I've been doing my homework (so to speak) and I've been interested in the wrasses possible for nano tanks, particularly in the larger range (like 29 or 34-gallon tanks). I've been reading threads about the lined wrasses (particularly the sixline) and I've come to the conclusion that, like dottybacks, they're a fish that you'd have to have alone in a tank. While I do love the motion of a sixline, it would be a shame to have such a larger nano dedicated to one fish, so I've trashed the idea of trying one or its relatives (like the fourline).

I have heard of the possum wrasses and the pinkstreaked wrasse (Pseudocheilinops ataenia), and am interested in people's experiences and opinions of them. Are they too cryptic, even in a nano tank? Are they too bland in color (as the pinkstreaked wrasse seems to be in pictures)?

Also, what other options are there, reef-safe or not? I imagine flasher wrasses, despite their size, are out of the question, but I'd like to hear people's experiences, pictures, et cetera on such as well.

Thanks you, everyone!

Note: I don't have a tank, probably won't anytime soon. However, I'm doing my research so I can make great decisions in the future.

After a lot of research, I did put a six line in my tank. My Midas Blenny tried to beat it up for about a week and now everthing is OK. It's been in there for about 3 months so far and no other problems, but I did get a small one and add it last. A well behaved, sixline is a great nano fish!

In the past, I did have a sixline in a BC14, but it was the only fish in there, so it's hard to measure how aggressive it was/could be. I've read such negative reviews of them on here that I'm too afraid to try one (or a fourline) with other fish.

I've had a flasher wrasse w no problems in both a 12 and 24 gallon. Although 1 jumped ship haha

What kind of flasher did you have? Did the flasher seem cramped (had enough room) in the tank? Also, was it a male/female, and if it was a male, did its color fade without a female?

Not at all. It was a filamented flasher. Dunno if it was male or female but the color never faded at all. Just make sure your tank has a lid. They tend to wanna take a leap out. Haha.

Here ya go

Thanks for the information. I might consider a flasher in the future, and I'm hoping to get a tank with a lid on it (as I just don't trust fish in general...then again, in the past I've had fish jump up from the tank and into/onto the back filtration).

Were you trying to post a picture?

I couldn't see it before, but now I can for some reason. Anyways, that's a STUNNING wrasse. Very inspiring. I'd really like to try a flasher wrasse someday, and I'm assuming from the fins that it's a male.

i've never witnessed aggressive behavior from a 6-line before, I'm not sure why so many people say they are a problem. It might be because in nano tanks people don't make enough hiding spots and tend to keep really small fish that will compete for hiding spots with them.

I wouldn't shy away from them, just make several spots for them to dart in/under rocks and hiding areas.

See, this is what confuses me. Some people say that they don't see the aggressive behavior, and others say that they're a terror, so I don't know. Maybe there's just not enough territory space in a nano for a sixline. Oh well. Thank you for the information.

Sixlines are quite attractive, affordable fish, though...

Mine wasn't aggressive at all either. In fact he swam all over the tank and was a blast to watch. Especially when he flashed. It was a cool fish which is why I'm getting one when my tanks done cycling

Are you going to go with another filamented flasher? I look forewrd to hearing more about it!

Fish can have very unique personalities but I have a 6 line wrasse in my nano cube 28 and it doesn't harass anything. I have seen one in a LFS that was in a tiny tank (maybe 8 gallons) and it was bullying a firefish but in a tank the size you're talking about I wouldn't worry too much. If anything maybe add it last.

Mine is housed with a royal gramma, a false percula clown, 2 blue/green chromis and a yellow watchman goby. I've had them all for months with zero problems. When I first set up my tank I wasn't even a fan of the 6 line but they kind of grew on me and I love mine now.

I agree, wrasse can have a mind all their own. You never really know until you try the one you like out. I had a melauaris wrasse in my 34g with 2 Ora black ice snowflakes, bangi cardinal, Ora splendid dottyback, diamond goby, lawn mower Blenny ,and everyone played nice. So wrasse can be awesome some are just plain wrasse holes. Lol
