NARC website

Hi y'all,

We are going to launch our new website in a short while. It's going to be a simple website where we can announce our future meeting schedule and list some member info. I am hoping to add a page for links and another for an online member registration.

Cameron (CorallineDream) recently offered to build the website and host it on his server for us so that we don't have to pay for the hosting fees. He found out that "northalabamareefclub.com" is available. I understand that the annual domain name registration costs about $34.99 for a year. I think it's truly worthwhile to get this going. Cameron is a professional IT guy as you might have gathered, and he will maintain it for us.

Everyone, please thank Cameron for making this a reality!!

Now I am going to get into the real reason for this thread. Yes, I am begging you people to chip in for the domain name registration. If everyone can donate just a few dollars, we can buy one year's worth for sure (the more years we buy, the cheaper it gets.)

In the future we can consider a token club dues which we will discuss in our future club meeting. If we have enough members, we will be able to charge only $ 1 or 2 for a year to join NARC. This should pay for the annual registration fees and for the cost of making the little yellow membership cards which Mariner has been doing for us for free until now (thank you, Mariner.) We can set up a savings account to put money in and periodically inform you on the expenses and what's going on with the account, if you'd like. This should not affect our membership structure at all. We will keep the club informal as always without officers. I just ask once a year for you to pay for the token dues. I will try to convince our sponsors to chip in, but we should not expect it. I consider it lucky if that happens.

I will chip in $5 toward the domain name registration. Anyone else?

That sounds great. It will be good to have a working web site again. $35/year sounds a little high for domain name registration. I only pay $15/year for the registration although I have a monthly "server rent" charge to pay. That may be why. Check out aplus.net (and others). They are advertising 2 years of registration for $15.40.

Whatever you decide, I will make a contribution.

yahoo has domains for 1.99 for the first year

godaddy has them for 6.99 a year

If I may suggest mambo for the website. Very easy to setup, Free, this is what we used at www.aquariumdesignsinc.com and www.thecoralgardens.com. I like it because you can have users that have accounts that can change content.

My whole website hosting domain and all is 3.95 a month, but I pay it once a year. I did my hosting at vizaweb.com. But if you have it free there is no need to pay for it .

I checked he has already purchased the name through network solutions and they do charge 34.99 for the first year if you don't buy multiples. So using a lower cost company isn't an option, for this year maybe next year use godaddy.com they are about the cheapest and largest around. Will you be setting up a paypal account to send dues to, and just link it on the site? That would make it alot easier for everyone, if not a check in the mail will work as well. I haven't been fortunate enough to attend a meeting and officially join, but I will still send a donation/dues to get this thing started, just let me know how much and how/where to send it. Also I want one of these "little yellow cards". I look foward to seeing the new site and I am willing to help with it should Cameron need help, as this is somewhat my field of work as well.

Count me in. I've got paypal or a mailbox, whichever is preferred.

Hey Mariner, where's my little yellow card??? **giggles**

Thank you for all the suggestions and the offer of donation!!

I am so very happy to finally have someone who is willing to build and keep the website maintained after having to live with a do-nothing website for so long. Can you feel the excitement?!

I am going to stick with whatever makes it easy for Cameron to get this website up. We will discuss the future choices and additional contents during our future meetings :)

I hope to start discussing about the contents during the next few meetings. Hope you all can attend the meeting to join in the discussion. I appreciate your comments and suggestions, but please remember to try to keep the website simple so we can maintain it up to date.

I would contribute a couple of bucks for the NARC Website. Personally I like sites for there ease of use "RC for example" Nothing overly flashy.

I'm in. I think we could setup a advertisement system, where LFS can pay to advertise their store on our Website. For one thing it would pay for any fees the sit3e might have. I know that the Atlanta Reef Club does that. You also get 10-30% off at all sponors Stores. But members of the club do pay a small fee to join. I payed $21.00 for the membership for a whole year. And So far I have saved over $300.00. So I think its well worth it. But that might be just me, but its an idea.

Thanks
Aaron

Hey Folks. I didn't mean to jump the gun on the domain name registration but I just didn't want it to get away. Kinda like that Coral at the fish store. Get it now or it'll be gone!

I know there are a lot of other cheap ways to get domain names etc., but Network Solutions has some really easy to use tools that are self service in nature and that I'm already familiar with.

I know we really don't want to get into club dues and all that. Personally I don't mind paying the annual registration but the site should belong to our club. I promise it will.

The main purpose of the site is really to have a place to list our future meeting dates and an "optional" members list to cross reference your name and reef central ID so we know who each other are at meetings. Also a real .com site for the little cards to give to other future members who are interested in attending.

I welcome any and all comments and suggestions.
