Nauti1us New Build - Barfy's Reef

nauti1us

ORCA President 2007~2008
After losing my 150 Gallon reef to a disastrous leak in the middle of the night"¦ despite after 25 years of being in this crazy hobby... went out and did it again... Just can't stop myself.

Here's my new 90 Gallon custom drilled Aquarium. Spent my birthday plumping it up and wet testing her prior to loading it up with my rock structures and livestock. The system is running sweet, no leaks and quiet as a mouse.

The back of the tank is painted black and my overflow is a custom "œBean Animal" three drain system. Thanks to Top Shelf Aquatics in Winter Park for drilling the holes. The Sump is a "œsocked" Eshops Refugium running approx 1200 GPH Water Blaster submersible circ. Pump. Experimenting with a CAD Lighting Aquarium PLS-100 Gen-3 Protein Skimmer (super quiet & small footprint)

While others have clearly done far more technical installations, I'm satisfied that my plumbing choices are solid. Future changes and or modifications will be do-able with the configuration I've chosen. The return back to the tank is an "œover the top/back" plumbed to push max water down the backside of the tank. This will force detritus and mulm towards the front of the tank and or suspend it in the water column for sock/skimmer removal. I used a combination of black and white pvc. The short answer is, if I had all the pvc I needed in black I would have used all black"¦ instead I had to supplement with some white. I also installed unions and ball valve unions at both ends of all plumbed interconnects.

The rock structures were built by me using cement (purchased at Top Shelf). Most of the LR taken out of my now defunct 150G was bleached and muratic'd and then left to dry before cementing up. Building these were sorta the highlight so far of this build. I've always been a "œrock stacker", however after having now done it this way, I can't see ever stacking again.

May 20th is this new reef's birthday"¦ as this was the day the ammonia and supplements were first added to begin the fast-cycle. Fingers crossed that I'll be ready to re-home my clowns in less than two weeks"¦ we'll see. I've never dosed a "œfast-cycle before". I am also adding in approximately three quarters of a 5 gallon bucket of reef sand from the 150G which is clean and cycled along with approx 30 pounds of LR from the 150G.

Home and ready to start plumbing

Tank filled with water and rock and cycling

Rock Structures

Gotta give a shout out to Cesar and Boostable (Jack) for the great base rock I used for the structures and also a big thank you to Matt, who encouraged me to "stay in" and not give up..! and he also loaned me a small tank to keep my clowns alive in during this build process. Thanks again fellas.

Almost time to start making up my "œfish/invert list". More pics to come once the cycle is done.

Looks great. If I ever get the chance to redo my rockwork I will definitely be changing it up in the same fashion as you have.

Very nice!
How do you like the CAD pipeless skimmer? I'm looking for a smaller footprint skimmer, and their line looks pretty good.
Edit: Are those Eshops rectangular socks? If so I've got a bunch that are like new that I don't use any more. You're welcome to them.

Hey Fuzz

The CAD is a much smaller skimmer than I'm used too... The fit and finish is very good and I was making foam instantly, even before break-in... The footprint on mine is like 4.5" X 4.5", very small.

I just started the cycle so I don't have real skimmate yet... but it is stripping the newly added fresh salt water of something brown and oddly smelly.

I'd feel better having had bought the size up, but the man at the booth ensured me that this size could easily handle my 90 well stocked. We'll see.

You can't hear it running at all aside from the tiny venturi air silencer.

I bought it at a booth at Reefapalooza.

How do you like the Eshopps refugium, what model is it? Do you notice any bowing on the sides when filled with water?

The sump seems awful thin as far as construction. It's seems well constructed otherwise and so far seems up to the task and the sides do not appear to be bowing.

The sock holder assembly is pretty good also. Well thought out. It's a R200 model

That's what I wanted to hear. I saw them at RAP, but every time I tried to talk to them their little booth was jammed. They've got a nice looking media reactor too.

Speaking of - I've been very happy with the Warner Marine EcoBak Plus pellets. I've got 500ml running in a Two Little Fishies reactor. The stuff is really doing a good job. I just need to increase the quantity to 750ml for my size tank.

I've ordered some parts to mod my old Zeovit Vertex MR1 media reactor to work with bio pellets. It's a lot bigger than what I'm using now so I'm thinking smaller footprint skimmer will be in order. My i-Tech 200 does a good job, it's just too big...
