Need advice on my upgrade

Hello RC, I currently have a 156 gallon tank that has been running for over 2 years. It is stocked with fish, softies, lps and sps. I also now have a 300 gallon sitting in my garage just waiting to be filled up with water. On the new set up I plan on using all new dry sand and all new dry rock. My question that I have is what is the best way to make this new set up ready for the sps after it cycles?

I have plenty of time to plan this out and would like to gather as much information as I can. I will tell you my plan and then please let me know if there is anything different I should do if needed.

I plan on taking all of my dry rock [BRS] and setting it in a bin of fresh ro water with a heater and powerhead for at least a month while doing weekly water changes. After this process is complete I will remove all freshwater and let the rocks dry out. I will then add all new saltwater to the bin with the rocks and keep a heater and powerhead in it. I will also add a raw shrimp to get the cycle going. If I let the rock cure like this for a few months will it have enough beneficial bacteria to support a new tank set up with sps? When setting the new tank up I can use some of my existing sand to seed the new dry sand also.

My plan on the breakdown of the 156 gallon will be to set up my old 65 gallon and let it cycle while being plumbed into a 40 breeder that I also have running. After that cycle is complete, I will then add all fish and corals from the 156 gallon to the 65 gallon while I build the 300 gallon set up. Once the 300 gallon is set up and running I will let it run for a month or so with some chromis in it then start to add my remainder of fish and corals into it. Does this sound like a good plan or should I do things differently? Thank you in advance.

I subscribed to this thread a few weeks back when I first saw it. I figured that if I had posted this, I'd want responses too. :strooper:

I'm in a similar situation right now. For about 2 months, I've been curing some BRS rock in separate containers, and cycling a 100 gallon sump separately as well. I plan on then adding the sump to my existing system. Long story short, my build parallels yours to a certain degree, and I'll be doing predominately SPS from the getgo.

The only thing I would possibly do differently is ensure that your dry rock is phosphate free. As I understand it, the more porous varieties of dry rock are abundant in phosphate. Lanthanum Chloride is good at removing phosphate that's leaching from the rocks. I've done a lot of research on that stuff recently, and just used it yesterday with positive results on my curing live rock.

I hope this helps!
