I have always thought these pumps were kind of cool and was just wondering how many people have had these and if they would recommend them. How would they do on a standard 120g.

Thanks

Andrew

I would not buy these pumps under any circumstances. I have owned a couple of them, and so has JJ, and we both had the same bad experience. They are prone to lots of problems. DON'T DO IT!

While I have never owned one, I have been doing quite a bit of research as I would like to get some better flow in my tank. I narrowed it down to really two options a Vortech or a Tunze 6055 and an Aquasurf.

Looking at the forums, there seems to be a very sharp line on the Vortechs, people either like them or they hate them. They do seem to have a lot of "issues", so I decided to steer clear of them. You may want to look into a Tunze setup instead, they are not perfect either, but the customer service is top notch IMO.

This is a very timely thread for me. I have been considering scrapping my closed loop on the 120 and going with either Vortechs or Tunzes. I have read a lot of the threads regarding both Vortechs and Tunzes and didn't really know what to think. The Vortechs seem to have several pluses for me: 1) a wider flow pattern so you don't have to aim them and 2) the new wireless device, 3) footprint in tank, 4) heat transfer. But then I have read about the noise, rusting, and other quality issues and think maybe I should just go with 6101s or 6055s on either a multicontroller or really pony up and get an AC3 with an aquasurf. But then we are really talking some coin.

It is good to hear some local opinions. It was obvious from checking out JJ's tank that he has some sort of exclusive marketing agreement with Tunze :eek2: but I was curious about other experiences.

Anyone local have Vortechs and like them?

I ran 2 vortechs on a 120 for a couple of years.
Tons of flow and never a problem.

I was put off by the way Ecotech handled the wireless controller update, but I have never had any problems with the pumps themselves.

I was an early adopter and bought one when they first came out. It was noisy at full speed and the dry side ran really hot. After all this time, I don't think they have resolved too many issues from what I've read.

I still like the concept of it but wish it was a more robust product.

Thanks everyone for the input. Seems like some have had a lot of issues with them, and for $400 I might stay clear of them.

I agree with this 100%. It is noisy at full speed and the outside gets hot enough to cook an egg on.

I think its a nice pump, but I think its money better invested elsewhere.

I have just as much flow from my mj mods (the output from two I mean)
