Need assistance - heater broke

I was home today from work sick, and woke up to a smokey smell. So I walked around the house to try and determine what it was. The water in the tank looked a little cloudy so I started checking out the equipment.

My heater broke - the bottom got sheared off. So I shut everything off and pulled the heater out, and cleaned out what I could. My question is where should I go from here? Everything appears to be fine. The temperature did rise to about 83 degrees.

Should I do a water change or just let the system take care of itself?

I would suggest a series of large water changes .. should help mitigate any potential contamination issues.

water changes and/or carbon use may be warranted, but how do the inhabitants look? if they're stressed, I'd put more emphasis on doing either of these.
