Need computer experts help setting up wireless routers for Apex.

Hi guys, I need some help setting up my routers to connect my apex to. I originally posted this thread here http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2419415 about my router situation where user Seedlessone suggested I buy the ASUS RTN66U router to set up as a dedicated bridge. I got the routers and now need some help setting them up to the correct mode.

So in my main house, there is my modem connected to my first ASUS RT-N66U router. This router is broadcasting wirelessly to all the devices in my house, but most importantly my main computer which is located in a guest house. In my guest house there is my main computer which I am currently on, connected wirelessly to the internet. I have a second ASUS RT-N66U router here, which I am looking to connect wirelessly to the signal broadcasted from the first, so that I can connect my computer and also my saltwater aquarium controller [the Neptune Apex] directly using the ethernet cable to this second router. I have been looking online for any asus instructions but they are all very unclear on how to do it, especially to someone like me who has absolutely no idea what a lot of the terms and abbreviations mean. Hopefully someone here has computer experience and can help point me in the right direction. I was told to set them up as a "dedicated bridge" if that helps, I have not touched my apex yet so I am just trying to set up the router for now. Thanks!

I love when tech people (like myself :)) make things more difficult than it needs to be. Here is a fairly simple writeup on how to use a second wireless router as a bridge.

Its not Asus specific but it will give you the basics to get it done. All you need to do is get the secondary router on the same ip scheme and subnet, setup the gateway on the primary and you should be off and running...

I have a feeling (I could be wrong) that if you don't know how to setup an access point then you aren't going to have any idea what an IP scheme and subnet even are.

In this case I would absolutely recommend the ASUS link above and possibly a call/chat with their tech support. The general idea is the same between models but there is going to be a specific process per brand/model where some terminology is going to be just a little different than others.

You are probably right, which is why I posted the other article with pictures (even though they are using different routers, same concept) in hopes that it helps those of the non-IT variety. BTW, EricGRIT, i wasnt saying you were making things harder than it needs to be, i was referring to the OP's original thread.

I gotcha. Maybe the combo will be a good one-two punch!

If you're trying to do this so that your conform to Neptune systems guideline that updates only be installed via hardwire your plan is faulted.

You're still making the connection to your Apex wireless. Using a bridge and then plugging into it via ethernet isn't any different then going wireless right from your intial router/access point.

FWIW

Thanks for the responses guys ill try it out and let you know how it works out.

Reefvet, I wanted to hard wire it in the first place because I did not get any internet access wirelessly anyway where the tank was. I was told if I only got an extra wifi extender and connected the apex wirelessly then my computer would have to be on all the time in order to check the apex levels or manage the apex, this way I can have my computer off and still manage the apex from somewhere else right? My understanding of how this all works isnt too good so please let me know if I am understanding something wrong here.

Or you can spend like $30 and get a power line Ethernet adapters so internet can run from your modem/router to your apex as long as you use another outlet for the adapters

I wanted to do that but unfortunately the power in my guest house isnt on the same line as the one in my main house where the main router is :headwalls:

It doesn't need to be the same circuit off your breaker panel, as long as it's all off the same meter it should work.
