No it's not a hydroid, it's more like the ball tip anemones. They're pretty cool critters and usually are not an issue. This isn't exactly a ball tip anemone but similar to it. The actual name escapes me. Maybe member cloak will come and give you the actual name. Or if I think of it I'll post it. I've got one of them in my tank and just keep tabs on it. They don't get any larger than a dime but some can get out of hand in numbers but from what I've read this isn't common.

very interesting article there are so many organisms that are so closely related as far as sight goes its crazy. I agree my brain coral didn't seem to mind it touching it all day but it was starting to smother it so I just pulled it off and its already starting to grow back. The stem wasn't like rock hard but more softer and it seems like the stems all have polyps on them so still not sure im going with ball tip anemones makes most sense so far...
