So bummed out, woke up this morning to see my little cleaner shrimp dead. He was the household favorite, even my 2yr old gets happy when she wakes up and to go say "hi shrimpie". I have a hunch I killed him and feel horrible about it.. Here's my info and hopefully someone can help verify a cause of death...

First off, the tank is a 15 gallon with live rock, 1 tiny ocellaris (Herbert), 2 snails I call Turbo and Boost. Turbo sucks, I think his shell is too big for him to stay stuck to anything long, but Boost is tinier and does awesome work. Not sure how long the big guy will make it unless he is secretive and only eats at night, but I digress... And the cleaner shrimp was my 1st critter for my tank. He was always awesome! Super friendly and social, shed on a regular schedule, ate fine, never a problem.
Got my fish from the same LFS (we only have 1 on the island unless you shop at Petco or other pet store) on Memorial Day and later noticed he had a white spot on his cheek that for the life of me I could not 100% identify with hours of googling and reading threads on here. I let him be for a couple days to observe incase it was from stress or he got bumped during transport. He acts fine, swims all over, would eat all day if I let him, and sleeps like a baby all night. He wouldn't let the shrimp ever clean him, but being tank-bred he probably has no clue about that lol. Well I then noticed a white 'thing' on his tail fin, like fuz almost and the next day it seemed slightly larger but i don't know for sure.. I went and got the Kordon Ich Attack as it was the only "reef safe" option and started dosing the next morning (Sunday) after my planned tank cleaning and water change/top off.
Yesterday after 3 doses (says to do it daily until cleared up) Shrimpie was not being his normal social self, he actually hid from me when I tried to target feed him to get him out from under his rock.. He has NEVER backed away from a hand or turned down food, so I knew something was wrong. And now he's a goner. :(

checked paramaters after I pulled him out:
Temp 82
SG is 1.022-23 as usual
Ammonia is NOT at 0 today. I can't get a perfect color match but I will say it's between .25-.5 ppm :mad2: I have not seen a bad reading since the tank finished cycling and it was 0 on Sunday.
Nitrite 0
Nitrate ~10-15

Obviously the ammonia is bad, but how would it increase so suddenly? How long after something dies before it releases ammonia? (meaning did it come from the dead shrimp that fast?) Did the ich attack cause it? That is the only variable in the situation. Our water top offs are done with straight ocean water from the same pump the LFS pulls it from. I even double checked the bucket this morning again JUST in case and there's no ammonia in it.

The fish is still in the same position: a few unidentifiable white things, nothing worse, but no odd behavior and a hardy appetite.

Sorry for the novel but I'm still new in this realm and wanted to cover all possible questions in 1 shot and need to know the next step.. Big water change? stop dosing?
I do not have a quarantine tank, and only have the 1 fish which is why i went with the supposed safe route of ich attack.

I would stop dosing, do a large water change and get a QT going. Get a small 10g tank to start. It is usually not recommended to add/use meds in your DT.

I would also get a pic of the clown and post in the disease section of RC to try to determine what the clown really has. From your description, it is not Ich.

Yeah I know it isn't the preferred method, which is the main reason I bought that stuff
tried getting pics of him but they're all blurry, he moves too much.. I'll try again though. I wasn't totally convinced of ich either, but I saw him scratch his face on the rock twice and that seemed to make everyone I asked say it was ich. Ironically today, his face looks better like the pimple thing deflated, but the tail fin is the same.

There are no such thing as truly reef safe med unless it's pure water with garlic smell ;)
Set up QT tank and use it for all your treatments.
GL.

It could be part poisoned...maybe I missed it because I am so tired but how long has tank been up and how often do you top off evaporation. The thing with small tanks is salinity can go up and down with every top off and I see a range in your parameters which for something like salinity should be only one number. Shrimps can be sensitive to changes in salinity which can just add to another problem expecially disease. Bigger tanks are easier just for the fact they are more stable, and ich usually does not get bigger. Anyway just try to avoid meds in display tanks if possible, quarantine tanks are very useful and inexpensive considering money you can save. Sometimes experiences like this helps you learn so don't be too hard on yourself...At least u r trying to get information which some people don't even try to do.

Thank you... I knew how super sensitive they were, and have been sooo careful with the salinity since day one. I took 3 hours to drip acclimate him because of the difference from LFS to home. when I wrote 1.022-23 I meant the swing arm rests in between those 2 numbers, so it's like 1.0225... And been consistently there

I do top offs usually every Sunday. Living in Hawaii the water is always a bit warmer and seems to evaporate quickly so doing it weekly I figured avoided big number fluctuations.
The tank has been cycled and running stable for a month now so still new, like me, but until now no issues..

I have heard of some people that add the water that comes with the fish from the LFS, some stores treat their fish tanks with copper, which is mortal for invertebrates

got a couple pics of the fish up in the disease section if anyone can help me identify it please!!

Well found my ammonia source.. Turbo died and can be the only source I can think of. Did a large water change and hope it helps my fish! Right before I found the snail the fish was backing up against the rock and kinda falling forward, so I freaked, then did the check.. I read enough horror stories to not wanna stick my nose anywhere near it, but I saw it "leaking" something into the water after I picked it up and the door had a pinkish spot that wasn't there ever, then got a whiff of it on my hands afterwards.. YUCK

If you have any ammonia in the tank, I would add something like SeaChem Prime to neutralize the ammonia into a non-toxic form. That will give you the time you need to address and correct the problem. Ammonia burns the gills of the fish, so even if it isn't enough to kill them, it isn't pleasant.

Could be wrong here, but once a week for top-off seems very low. I have an ATO, but many people who do manual top-off do so daily to keep things stable. Probably not what caused your issue, but something to consider going forward.

Sometimes it more like 5 days.. Don't really see much difference in water in 1-2 days, but I can def try to do them more frequently.

Here in arizona I do a top off every other day. I also have my blinds closed and keep a fan running on the tank. I'm really not much help, am I?

LOL, no, but that's fine! I'll probably step mine up a bit, I try to hard to keep it cool enough to stay put longer, but I guess it's easier just to do top offs more

re check salinity your if you are topping off with ocean water that will raise your salinity
top off fresh water only
