On June 24th my lfs owner gave me this coral to see if I can bring it back. As you can see by the progression in the pic it is slowly comeing back to life. I would really like to learn more about this coral and would like to start with an id of what it is. I know the pics are pretty low quality (camera phone), but I am hopeing that there is enough there for some one to identify it. Thank you for any help

I think that it looks like a scolymia. If you check out some pics online, let me know what you think, maybe when the coral regains more of its color it will be easier to tell what the body of the coral looks like. Congrats on saving it.

they look alike when you have healthy specimins...almost impossible to tell with that photo when its hurtin' like it is. either way keep doing what your doing and give it some time and food.

good luck

I don't think it's a lacrymalis, since it's not opening up like one, but it's definitely a cynarina or scolymia of some sort, I had one that I nursed back that looked a lot like that one at first, it's now platinum red and green, 5" when opened, and one of the nicest corals in my display :D

after looking through veron's book, I second cynarina lacrymalis, expect it to open up nicely around the edges though, unlike most lacrymalis

some of my customers that we do maintenance for bought one from us that looks just like that one. it wasnt fully colored when i got it in, and they bought it pretty quickly before it had got all its colores.needles to say its one of my top 10 corals in the world in my book.im always jealous when we go to there tank every 2 weeks to do water changes.like someone above said feed it alot and a little thing i found that they love is 2 little fishes zoplan it really helped bring out the colors in the one they have!

It's neon green with carnation pink and fire red... the redish parts on the bottom look like skeletal areas but still have color.. I don't see any flesh.. the back side also has places that are totaly dead with coraline on them.. the coral after a few days in the tank with better light and more food seems to really be expanding out.
Sorry about the bad picture.. I had only the blue actinic on becuase at the shop they only had 2 small NO flourecent on top of the tank !!! I didn't want to stress it further with 400 watts.
It has atleast two mouths and the underside is completely flat.
The skeltal areas aren't just one round circle but looks like many large ovals interwooven.

Sorry to take this thread hostage too.. I just really need some help and it was so simular to this post.

I just got one of these from a guy yesterday, basically in the same shape that your first pics were. I bought a bunch of other stuff, so he gave it to me. I fed mysis, clams and cyclops tonight.

I noticed everyone said feed alot. Does that mean a couple times a day or what?

Thanks.

I fed this one about once a day, but I would think that if it would take food more then once a day it couldent hurt.

You have to be careful with that, with some corals the food can get backed up and either rot in their gut, or they have to spit it out before they have had a chance to get nutrients out of it to take the new food in.

About once a day is as much as I would feed it.
