Hi ALL
I am having a lot of trouble with the over flow kit for my twin over flows on my 180 i have a pan world 100px-x 1270 gph.
The pump is not to big for the tank, the overflows can take 600gph making it a total of 1200gph, the trouble i am having is,
the overflow pipe where the t-fitting is at the top with the 3 wholes in it,when i try to open my pump to get more flow in to my main tank i get a lot of air in my drain pipes, i have tried what aga as told me to do witch was pull the pipe up a little and it would stop, well when i pulled the pipe up the water came up to high in the overflows, when i push the pipe down the water went down,i don't know what to do about this, bottom line to much air
in my drain pipes and a lot of noise coming from the return pipes.
I have a ball vale on top of my pump i have tried to back it off and the air goes away but not much flow in main tank, i know you don't need a river flow in the tank but would like to see a little more flow, my pump is at 3/4 open, my over flows the water does,nt go up and down meaning to much flow coming in to overflows, that is not the case,
So if any body has had this problem can you please help me with
This i am at the end of my line.
Thanks for your time and have a grate night.

Air in the drains is the way it has to be. The "Durso type units" you have will make your system quiet at the tanks top. The water comming out has to have all that air in it or it would make a very loud slurping noise at the point of entry in the overflow. You need to move the drains up so that the water level inside the overflow is about 1/2" lower than the overflows inner wall. This will allow good scavenging by the overflow and not have the incomming water make a splashing noise. Down the bottom, what type of filter are you using. Is it a wet / dry with a tray that the filter pad sits in,( can be very noisy no matter what you do) or do you have a Berlin style bag system? There are ways to quiet the noise at the exit too. Just remember all that air is necessary. The plumbing is designed to take in whatever amount of air it needs to move that water down and out.

HI Tampa Aquarium Service

HEY Tampa Aquarium Service.
I was just looking at my overflow box and it looked like it was being robed of water, it looked like the water was draining and then it stoped and then it got full again and it was suching air until it filled, could it be that the overflow box with the little vents in frount are not leting enough water in and when it gets low it draws air.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks again.

Does the hose from the bottom of the tank to the filter run down hill all the way or are there any parts of it that are laying flat or even up hill? Like a loop? this will cause the water in the hose to slow down or even stop until the weight of the water above builds to the point where it pushes it through. The speed of the water in the hose will then cause a small suction and pull extra water out of the box.

In other words the hose from the bottom of your tank to the filter should be as straight down as you can make it. Cut it short if you have to.

Got any pics?

Hey Tampa
My drain lines are good no bump or lumps.
i cant figer this out for anything.
i turn the pump up so i can get good flow and the drains line bubble like crazy my right one really goes crazy i hope i can fix this soon or i am going to break the tank down, its stopping me from doing any thing, i bough a nice protein skimmer but cant hook it up because it is going to be fed buy my return line it sits
on the out side of my tank not in sump.
well thanks again for your help and have a good day.

Rich

rich,
i had the same exact problem that you have except that i have a 120aga instead of 180aga, it drove me crazy for like 3 days trying to adjust it and playing with the durso up and down. like you said i almost came to a point where i almost smash the dam thing. lol what i did to solve this problem was to use hard pvc plumbing. i was using flex (not pvc) and bc all the looping and up hill and down hill it was causing all this noise and gurgling noise. now i plumb it with pvc w/o any resistance and it flows perfectly.

hey reefmvp
did you change the returns or the drains and what do you mean when you say and bc all the looping what do you mean.
Thanks so much for your input.
have a good night, oh i have flex pvc do you think that would mater?.

rich,
no i didnt change any of the drain or return. i have an aga model 4 wetdry filter, the filter came with (2) 4' drain hose, as you know my aga 120gal is 4'x2'x2' and the wetdry drains are on one side so there for on of my drains only require about 1' and the other drain about 3'. so now i have 3' extra on one drain and 1' extra on the other and because water had to travel loops cause by extra length on the hose, it cause a lot of back lash and air intake.
so what i did was redo all my plumbing using pvc, this way i have a direct path from my drain to sump. i also use a mag 18 (1800gph) as my return.
sorry rich if my explaination is not to clear, is the best way i can put it into words w/o showing you, if it helps heres a video of my tank and a few mins into the clip i show the filtration on the bottom so i hope this gives you an idea what im talking about. good luck
