Need help with new tank

Hi I need some help my miss has said I can't have a bigger tank as we don't have the room, are tank is 48x18x18 so no 5ft long tank [emoji24]but I was thinking how high can you go as I've been looking for a 48x24x36 or taller. So any idea where I can get one or how tall I can go ?

You already have a good sized tank and height will only add more swimming space (unless you aquascape with that in mind), for a reef tank. Also, if its for a reef tank you'll need stronger lighting the deeper (height) you go. Taller tanks are just that much more difficult to work in if needed.

Also, gas exchange takes place only at the surface, so no matter how much taller you go, you can't keep more fish in a taller tank than a shorter one with the same dimensional footprint.

There are a lot of tall tanks available though.

I have a 31" tank and it's a PITA to get to the bottom.

Go deeper if you can...

Keep in mind you have to get in there every once in a while for coral/rock placement, general maintenance, etc. Unless you have really, really long arms, anything more than 24" deep may be troublesome. I'm right a 6' tall, and can barely reach the bottom of my 24" deep display. Food for thought...good luck with your decision.

I have a 48 that's 24 deep and I'm not a fan. Like others said about gas exchange but mostly cause it is hard to aqua scape. I don't like to have places I can't get to for cleaning or if a fish needs to be removed, so I don't lean the rocks against the walls. With a narrow base it's very hard to get the rocks tall and looking good. Even if you use rods or whatev to stick the rocks together the taller you go the less stable it is. Plus it just looks like a flat wall.

Ive seen some very cool fresh water tanks that almost resemble a flat screen tv, but there aren't very many narrow salt water tanks that look right to me. Idk, maybe if you had a big sump full of rocks and some kind of fish that doesn't need places to hide?

This is the perfect size imo. I personally wouldn't go shorter than 24'' tall. I like my tanks between 24-27''. Even though my current tank is only 12'' in height

Similar to our frag tank size: 60x36x16
