Need help with selecting a 24g system

Hello folks:

I'm new to the hobby and decided to put together a 24g nano reef aquarium. After reading and researching about the subject, I haven't been able to figure out if I should get a system with a canopy(lid) or without one. What would you recommend? What's the risk of fish jumping out of tank on systems without a canopy?

Thanks in advance for your help and let me say that the projects that you folks have put together and shown on the board are very inspiring.

Really, it's a personal choice. Many people don't like the open top look. Fish can jump out, and the risk depends on the species. You can always put some egg crate (grating) on top of the open top to prevent suicides. The open top is a bit more flexible as far as adding equipment. The open top is a metal halide, meaning you'll be able to keep higher light species. Of course, you could mod the hooded version to add more lights (as I have done, see my journal) or even a metal halide light.

So the real questions are: what do you think looks best? what types of corals would you like to keep? If you want to keep high-light species, would you want to modify a hood?

Also, check out nanocustoms.com as they sell kits and already modded hoods if your not a DIYer.
