Need help with selecting a zoom lens

Hey folks, I am planning a trip to VA next month and right now all I have is the basic lens that came with my Canon XTi. So I was looking at the Canon 70-200mm f/4.0L USM Autofocus Lens and the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO AF HSM. I know that the canon L series is top of the line and I also know that the lenses are what makes the pictures look ok or awesome. Now I am on a tight budget that is why I was looking at these two lenses. In your opinion which one is better and would paying more for the canon really make a huge difference. Will also consider other suggestion I am just looking for good-great photos, nothing pro quality. Thanks in advance

Actually, if you buy the non-IS version of the Canon it's actually cheaper than the Sigma. I've never owned the Sigma but the reviews are decent. Because the Sigma is one stop faster it's got a lot more glass. As a result it's twice the weight and quite a bit larger than the Canon. On the XTi, which is a pretty small body, the larger lens might be a bit awkward.

Both will take good pictures.

Thanks beerguy, the helps. Do you have the Canon and how far out does it go from the front of the camera body. Now lets assume that these lenses would not be available. What in your opinion would be something similar. Also do you know of any place that might rents them be for you buy?

I have the 70-200F4 IS and non IS. I myself wanted the IS version. The other one is sitting in my closet. If your interested let me now.

The 2.8 Sigma may allow for a little better focusing in low light. Also gain one stop of speed for shutter but for me not worth the weight. If I have to choose IS or one stop speed I'd go IS. You can always bump up ISO in the digital era.
