Need Protein Skimmer but no Space

I have a problem. I have a new 250 gallon tank, but the stand only leaves 2 ft (exactly 24 inches) underneath. I need to purchase a protein skimmer, but all the ones that are rated for 300 gallons (250 gallon tank and 50 gallon sump) are too tall. From what I have read, the taller, the better, so what are my options? I don't mind putting the skimmer outside of the tank perhaps on the floor next to the tank if I have to. If there is a skimmer out there that would work in my sump, I would appreciate the info. I have heard of the turbo or the octopus, but have not found what I want. I also want one that works well, so I am hesitant to buy one that does not come recommended.

Any info would be appreciated.

My skimmer would barely fit under my tank, even though The stand was three feet tall. So i had an equipment closet made to store the chiller and skimmer(MRC4 recirc)

You could have a sump room in your basement

Or you can use two smaller skimmers.

I'm using a euroreef CS12-1 which is 21" tall and uses 12" dia tube. This might work for you.

I checked the dimmensions and it is listed as being 24 inches tall. Are you sure about the height?
