I have a tang with ick. He's in the display tank and I was hoping to leave him there. I thought things were going okay, then he started to not to move around as much. He's active again, and has been eating well. I'm soaking his food in garlic. I'm thinking I should move him and set-up a QT tank and do the hyposalinity. I didn't want to do that, because of stress and so forth. Do you think I should do that? If I do, will he just recatch it when returned to the main tank? No other fish in there, look to have it.

thats a tricky one ,, i would set up a qt tank and get her back to good so your display tank does not take a hit like mine did last year because of simple ick on a powder brown , took out 3/4 of my tank in 6-8 weeks.
a lot on the line to leave in the display

i think so ,,, its better than nothing , it should work for a short period of time , make sure you have a nice quiet place for her to hide , get rid of that stress shes going through , like a plastic flower pot or 4-6 inch tube about 6-8 inches long , just somewhere for her to relax and chill

and if your going to keep tangs, you should have a kick butt UV also , slow the flow through the UV unit , it will kill parasites and help with algae too . cleaner shrimp, cleaner wrasse, and neon gobies can help with some of the parasites

another coin toss question , there are a few nice ones , the lifeguard external ones are really nice if you have the room outside your sump , or in for that matter , but real tall . they have several other ones , turbo twist 36 watter is a small compact with big power UV unit and they do help out !!! some say they dont ,,, i say they do help out for sure ,,,,,, they nuke stuff !!!

yea they cook the good bac too ,,, if its big enough i will cook all the bad and good bac in your system , some say the answer to that is to jack up your pump so the water is not in front of the light to long for so called algae control , but if you want to kill parasites good and bad you slow the pump down so it stay in the light for longer period of time , i have mine at a slow rate to do some killin in there. i had a serious ick outbreak from a powder brown and it took out most of my tank last year and i if cant help that from happening again ...im in !!! UV for me,,,,,,

He's going to be really hard to catch, but have a few questions when I do. If I QT him for six weeks and put him back in the tank will he just get it again? There are other fish in the tank, that don't seem to have a problem. Would they all have to come out as well, to leave the tank fishless for a while, or would a UV work?

From what I understand..unless all the fish are removed and the tank runs "fallow" for around 6 weeks that the ich parasite will still be there. It is possible the fish could build up an immunity but it is also possible each infestation could get worse with each life cycle of the ich. Also, hypo did not work for me..hth

IMO you may stress the remaining fish too much during your attempts to catch him causing them to become more likely to pick up the parasite. If you cant catch him in a fish trap method I would not bother, it is already in the system anyway.

boozerell cleaner shrimp and uv helped a lot with my blue hippos they at 1 time or another each develop tiny cases of ick but they park in front of the cleaner shrimp all the time and he picks at em. I also added some sort of cleaner wrasse not sure of the name he picks at the tangs too(and my arm every time i put it in the tank) But since ive added uv i have not noticed any at all. Just my experience, not sure how bad yours is. Its a tough call on moving him or not, how you gonna catch him? I cant catch mine not even in a fish trap. I tried the bottle trick too didnt work for me.

Ohiomom,
The hyposalinity didn't work for you? Did you do something else instead?

Aadler,
A fish trap is probably a better idea, than stressing everyone out. I was concerned about that.
