Need some wrasse ideas

So I want to get some more wrasses but I just can't make up my mind!!! I can't spend $150 on some of the more amazing ones, but there are plenty to choose from!

So far I have a carpenter's flasher in my tank who has lost his spikes due to no female. I don't think it's possible to add a female at this point without a bloodbath, what do you think?

The only wrasse I do know I want is the yellow coris. absolutely one of my favorites!!

any suggestions of some that get along, will bring color and are reef safe? thanks!!!

McCosker's, line spot, and filimented flashed wrasses are some of my favorite flasher wrasses. For fairy wrasses I like the exquisite, pylei (can be affordable if you get a female and let it go male), and the red margin. Those are just some ideas for you. If you want to add them make sure they are added before a yellow coris if you add a yellow coris.

I think a coris will eat the snails if you have any...my personnal favorite is the mystery wrasse for there colors

The flasher wrasses will be fine together. I love the exquisites, but they will lose their vibrant colors without the presence of a female or other male fairies for competition. A pair or trio of exquisties would be awesome.


As has already been mentioned, if you are going to add a yellow coris wrasse with fairy and flasher wrasses, make sure the yellow coris wrasse is the last one added. The same would apply for a mystery wrasse if you decide to go that way.

I just got a melenarus wrasse and love it. She's now in QT but going in DT soon. I am taking a risk though with my snails and shrimp, but we'll see. I like the yellow coris too!

Should be fine. Just use an acclimation box for a day or two before you release into the DT. Your tank is big enough for more than one flasher, but you may get some little spats for the first day depending on how long the new additon(s) were in the acclimation box.

I just got a melenarus wrasse and love it. She's now in QT but going in DT soon. I am taking a risk though with my snails and shrimp, but we'll see. I like the yellow coris too!

+1 on the melenarus, it's a great fish with great personality. Also look into the leopard wrasses, IMO there are few fish more striking than a male leopard wrasse (meleagris).

I was thinking about getting an acclimation box. how long do you keep them in there for usually?

I am still not so sure on the melenarus just because of the fact that it will eat snails and crabs. I really need those guys for a CUC. I heard the yellow is much less likely to eat those things. although the rate at which my nerite snails multiply, maybe I could use some eating lol.

good to know! I would try to get a pair then! I'm not too into the mystery to be honest. I hear they can be bullies. plus I can't justify the price tag either.

I've had two leopards in the past (M. meleagris and M. bipartitus), getting them to eat pellets wasn't much work.

As for the acclimation box, judgement call (could be 1 day, could be quite a bit longer). You need to watch interaction to see if there is any aggression from others, and to make sure they are stressing out with all the new fish activity around them..
