New and needing help with sump info

Hello I am not so new to salt water I have been keeping a 8 gal IM nuvo for a while now but I am new to sump filters and built in overflows.

I just picked up a 30 gal glass tank that I am planing to drill and add a wet/dry sump.

I'm having problems figuring out how large a pipe to install against how large my pump is. I have a 10 gal that I want to make my sump

Tank is 4ft tall 30" wide. Going to set the OF box hight to 1" and I'm drilling my out let at the bottom of the tank. Was thinking of selecting a pump with 251 GPH and drilling my tank to 3/4 inch outlet.


Please if any one can help me out with any info that would be great. Have been reading lots of forums and info but I just don't seem to be getting it and don't really want to drill my tank with the wrong hole size that would suck.

Not sure what you mean by wet/dry sump? If your planning on using BIO balls then forget it. People stopped using stuff like that a long time ago because those things trap debris. A 251gph pump is not going to pump at that rate with 4' of height. Are you using hose or PVC? Are there any 90s or 45s? Your output should be bigger then whats on the pump to reduce friction so lets say the pump has a 3/4 outlet then you would want to go 1" on the pipe. Not sure if this applies to hose as well. What type of pump are you looking at?

I was going to select the syncra 1.0 from bulk reef it says it rated at 5 ft. Ok so no more bio balls, what type of media can I put in there instead? I was going to go pvc for overflow outlet and hose for inlet from pump if that's something that is ok or should I stick to just one. So I should go 1" over flow witch is 375 GPH with a 251 GPH pump. Wouldn't that cause a flood?

Also so no there is no 90 degree or 45 I am drilling my tank at the bottom so water will go straight down and a hose will return from the pump at a slight angle

do a search on beananimal setup quiet, safe and robust. Let's examine your sump size, if you can fit/afford it maybe you want to put in a 30 gal sump so you could have room for your skimmer, maybe a gfo/carbon reactor some macro algae, some rubble to get micro fauna going, heater and maybe a waterfall algae scrubber. I know it all adds up quick, space wise.

I would love to install a larger sump but my stand will only allow a 10 to 15 gall tank to fit underneath so I'm just trying to make the most of the space and gain the knowledge to make a bigger sump later on.

If you are a DIY person make it out of acrylic so you can increase the height of the walls and increase volume

No not the over flow the outlet or output of the pump you go up on the size. For hose I don't think people do that. You don't put anything on the inlet of the pump. Live rock is what you use in place of BIO balls. That pump can only go 5' max which means you will have hardly any flow at 4' so it's not going to work. You have to look at the pump curve. You would probably get 50 or 60gph out of that pump if that. You need more like a syncra 3 or 3.5. You will have to dial it back. How do you plan on having the hose put water back into the tank? Most peop have some kind of pipe that sits on the top of the tank which means 90s.

Something like this (as you can see the pipe has 3 90s which means your flow will be lower)

New and needing help with sump info

I'd use 1 inch drains and 3/4 inch return. Bean animal is good but you'd also be okay with herbie with the size of your setup. Both are silent..... Lots of pump options but I'd want at least 350-450 gph return rate with that 4 foot head pressure. Mag drive 5 would be the smallest I would use.

I wouldn't use a mag pump they make a lot of noise stick with the syncra or eheim. I would give your self a bit more pump in case you decide to up the flow or run some stuff like a reactor off of it. If you don't have enough pump or flow you will have to buy a new pump vs dialing back a bit to much flow.

You know what I didn't even think about the inlet pipe SFISH thank you. Yes there will be one 90 degree angle & i will look into the 3.5 pump.also will do a 1" for my overflow and do 3/4" for my hose coming from my pump back to my tank. Also wanted to ask about filter socks at the end of ur inlet tube? Practical?

Filter socks would be on the pipe from the over flow that is in the sump

Coming off the outlet of the pump use a small pice of PVC and make something like this to dial it back.
