Hi Everyone!

Im Matt, and i've always been interested in reef tanks and this year i finally decided it was time to start one. I'm still a beginner but im learning. I look forward to the community.

Thanks!

Welcome!

Personally I think you found the absolute best forums there are for saltwater. Read the sticky here about starting up. Remember these old school vets found out stuff the hard way with money involved and they want you to succeed. Be skeptical of your local fish store and treat the stickies here like the gospel.

I'm about 3 years in and I owe this place every bit of my success.

[Welcome]

Read, read, and read some more and ask any questions you have even if you think they are dumb. This hobby can be very enjoyable so take your time and go slow.

Good luck

Welcome to reef central! Ask plenty of questions and buy the right equipment to begin with and have patience, that will save you tons of frustration down the road.

Welcome,

I agree with the others, this place is amazing, and buy the right equipment first time around, otherwise your going to go through a world of hurt.

Good Luck!!

Matt you pick out your setup yet?

I am in the same boat. I know I want to do it. I need to figure out what I can afford and what my setup would be.

standard 20 gal?

I am starting to lean towards a fluval m60 - I wanted bigger but wife is being a pain figure I will learn on a small tank even though margin is tighter

I'm looking to figure out what setup I want as well. I know I want a cube aquarium, hopefully rimless. I was looking for something like a all in one or close to it, then upgrading the equipment as time goes on. Do you guys have any ideas?

Whats the budget?

my local fish store has some rimless, but you have to figure out all the stuff to go with it. That all in ones seem like a softer entry point, but is it really once you decide you need to upgrade everything?

What about the small red sea reefer if budget is big?

I saw one of those and it looked cool seems like it comes with sump. Main thing you have to buy here is skimmer and lights?

I haven't keep my first salt water fish yet though so maybe one of the more knowledgeable folks will weigh in lol

I have never owned an all in one tank. One thing I like to tell new folks is try to have a vision of what your tank will be for example fish only, a softy tank or a full SPS tank.

Also be realistic and honest in your expectations. We all see the TOTM pictures and want one. Think about funds, time commitment and above all the patience to see your vision through. These things should all play a factor in picking out a setup. good luck just my two cents

20 gallons for a reef tank is kinda small. You may want to look at going bigger since the more volume you have, the more stable the tank will be and your fish will be healthier with more room to swim too.

Welcome to reef central. One of the best places to start out. Its where I did. All my tanka have been successful and i beleive its because of the wealth of information I got from this forum.
