New and trying an aggressive tank

anglers are much better off in a species only tank, for a number of reasons - primarily feeding (imo) issues, and obviously compatibility - not many eels will ignore an easily caught meal like an anglerfish. There are obviously some larger varieties out there - but they are expensive and hard to come by.

to answer your other question - no, you do not have to have a sump, but water quality and environment are always critical to success with marine fish - esp. the sensitive varities, and I would think a live rock based filtration system (which usually includes a skimmer) would be your best bet (aesthetically as well).

hth, any other fish you are thinking of? plenty of good ones out there.

OK - so I do not need a sump. If I get live rock, a protein skimmer is a necessary?

All I really care about is having an angler. I'm happy to put other fish in the tank too. What sort of fish will co-exist peacefully with an angler?

ive had a fish only for 4 yrs w/ just a emperor 400 --
i read in a book once "in theory" you can keep a tank w/out any filters if you change the water enough.
it is possible, but get a skimmer --it pulls gunk out of the water not into a canister to rot --know what im sayin'
buy a cheap superskimmer or something
