Purchased a Black Clown, woke up this morning, and he seems to have a really thick slime coat as of today. Any reasons why, he is actively swimming around, but his fins seem somewhat clamped. Any ideas?
Yeah, sounds like brooklynella. Hopefully I can help you out a little more. Follow the links below. They will explain the protozoa and give you some treatment options.
hey thanks for the help, i returned him to the store, seems like wholesalers are having an outbreak during this time, so i'll wait before i order another one.
the lfs, gave me a pretty large GBTA to replace him, looks like its about to split...
In a case like this you can't really blame wholesalers. If it is a wild caught clown they come in from the wild and diseases like brook and ich are out there. In the great open sea, however, there are natural ways of managing and fighting off such things.
When you are talking in the scope of the home aquarium, some quarantine and TLC are the key if you really love a fish and want to help him out. Hopefully your LFS cares enough to take these steps to nurse the little guy back to health, but if possible I recommend having an extra QT tank you can treat fish with just for cases like this.
