hello all, I am new to the reef stuff. I have been keeing marine aquariums for about 15 years but just recently got interested in reef keepin. Anyway, I have a 220 that has powercompacts above it. Water quality is very good ph is about 8. When I first added him he did great would puff up huge during the day and slim down at night. It looked fantastic. But the last week he has been staying small and not coming out at all. Nothing has changed, his color looks good but no change in size. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

PH is a tad low. PC may not be enough. Too strong of flow will keep them shrunk as well.

Are you feeding it?

Well I havnt been feeding it, what should I feed it and how? I know I sound like an idiot but I really dont know. I added some ph buffer to bring the ph up and moved him in a area whrere he should be sheltered from the water movement also. Thanks so much

You should be fine just feeding him any meaty foods. What I usually do is squirt some cyclops into the tank or some other food to get his tentacles out and ready for food and then I directly feed mysis shrimp to it using a turkey baster.

Brains are not overly light demanding PCs are fine. I sometimes do the cyclops thing, then I very thinly shave off small pieces of shrimp or scallop or if I'm having salt water fish such as talipia, he likes that to. What ever I'm feeding, I soak the shavings in phyto and sometimes micro-vert or even cyclop-eeze. He'll love it!

There is a very good article in a past FAMA that discusses brains. Some things real quick are:

1. They don't need intense light but don't they don't take to immediate swings in light intensity.
2. They need to eat at least twice a week and with meaty foods or something like cyclopeeze.
3. They are slow eaters so give them time before powering up and turning on heads...like an hour or more.
4. While they are more at home on a sandy bottom they can do just as well on rock.
5. Low to medium flow and nothing stronger.

Feeding is the key and why i am up at 2:15 AM...I just got done feeding my brains:)

I use a cut in half liter soda bottle method because if i didn't my skunks would never, and I mean NEVER, leave them in peace to eat. I feed finely chopped mysis and Cyclopeeze and man do their feeding polyps come out and extend...plus they really puff up. It's a totally cool experience to see how they react and change.

Again, you really need to target feed twice a week at a minimum and a cut in half soda liter soda bottle is just the trick!
