Hi All,
I have a chance to buy a great tank for cheap (180 gallon under 400)

The tank is drilled on the side as it was meant to be a room divider, I will not use it this way. It has a 3 inch overflow hole drilled on the side towards the bottom. My plan is to hook up a black PVC pipe that will go up towards the top of the tank, put a screen on it, and hide it as much as possible with rocks.

Question: what is the downside of doing this?

What is the pipe for? Sounds like you don't want to use the side drilled hole at all...what is the screen for?

If I were you I'd just put in a bulkhead fitting and plug it...drill the tank again the way you want it and proceed.

If you are thinking of just using a PVC pipe as your "overflow" (ie pipe with screen on the top), you will not get good surface skimming. You need to have a "weir" with sufficient surface area. You should add an overflow box around where your pvc pipe goes into the tank. While tank is not setup I would consider drilling some additional holes for Herbie or Bean Animal drain system. Use search on this site for info on both.
