New fish in the future

Hi all,

I set up a 40b about a month ago (after cycle.) I upgraded from a 20H that I had for about 3 years that was fowlr. I am looking to get another fish at some point in the next month or so, but I would like a little input on what would be good with what I have. (I would like something that swims around and is nice looking)

Stock that came from my 20H:
- 2 Ocellaris Clowns (Mated Pair)
- 1 Bi-Color Angel (This was added to the 20 when it was tiny and I had decided on upgrading)
- 5 Blue Legged Hermits
- 1 Urchin (The black spiky one...not sure of the type)
- Kenya Tree

Stock added after 40B was set up:
- 4 Red-Legged Hermits
- 1 Diamond Goby
- Green Star Polyp
- Brown Palys (I believe they are palys)

I know I could only add one or two smaller fish to this so I don't overstock. All current inhabitants are happy and healthy.

Do you all have any suggestions?

Firefish, blue/green chromis (although they MAY have some issues unless they are solo), gobies/hawkfish if you like bottom dwellers, wrasses are fun but are very territorial and may not get along with fish added later. Basslets are pretty cool looking fish.

Being a 40b, you have limited options because some of the other "Active" swimmers need more room. I'm a little surprised about the Angel being in there, even a "dwarf" shouldn't really be in anything less than a 70.

McCoskers wrasse, male of course

I'd be careful with this though. Preferred tank size is 55+ and these fish sometimes think they are flying fish.....wheeeeeeeeeeee! (make sure you have a good lid). Also, wrasses, even though mostly peaceful still become territorial and really don't like other wrasses or pseudochromis.

There are so many different size recommendations for the McCoskers it's not funny. They will be fine in a 40.

Yes I agree the Royal Gramma would be another good choice.

Any fish can go carpet surfing and all tanks need a top IMO. The one made from screen frame and the clear 1/4" clear screen is the way to go. Just remember ANY fish is able to jump at some point and time. Why take the chance?

Oh yeah and you couldn't GIVE me a pseudochromis Nasty Mean bastiches!

Thanks for the responses!

The angel in my tank seems REALLY happy. It's always swimming around back and forth, then chillin in his rock area for a bit before repeating. If it gets too big, I may have to trade it in, though. :(

That McCosker's Wrasse is awesome. How big do they get, though? I only plan on putting one (two if they are something that like to be together) in there. So I would probably be okay with it if that is my last addition. I used to have a 6-line wrasse, but it completely disappeared. I checked the carpet even though I had a good lid on the tank. Nowhere... I'm assuming he died and the crabs got him overnight.

Are there any smaller ones that would school and stay that way? I know chromis like to school at first, but they always separate after they get used to the tank.

The McCoskers gets to 3 1/2" - 4"

A 6 line wrasse is a very bad choice, get very aggressive when older.

Yes there are some schooling fish but most are very hard to feed and then most will fight to the death until you have only one. But there are the cardinals that are schooling fish some are quite attractive but all of them to me are very boring. LOL They don't do anything

The blue/green chromis will school but in all likelihood they will play Highlander...."there must be only one!". I have a single blue/green and he is pretty active in the tank, constantly swimming everywhere. He's more of a top to mid tank dweller so it worked out good for me since I have a hawkfish as my bottom dweller and a firefish for my mid-dweller. I also have a Clown, who well isn't really funny but he goes everywhere.

You could get a pair of firefish also - but make sure you have a top or you will have fish potato chips on your floor.
