New frag from Mike Paletta unknown acro

consumed corals

In Memoriam
So I recieved this frag of an unknown acro from Purplereef. He got this piece from Mike Paletta at a swap earlier this year. We could not figure out what type of acro this is but, BigE told me I needed to give it a fancy Palleta name. So I have been kicking around a few names and think I have decided on this.

PALETTA'S GREYSTOKE

Please let me know what you think of it's name, or other possible suggestions!

IMO you should try to find a legit name for it if it really does have Mike Paletta lineage to it. Or at least find the actual species name. The last thing this hobby needs in a made-up show name with a uncreditable persons name tagged to it.

I have searched the coral database to find what type of acro this is to no avail. As far as lineage goes, this piece was an untouched frag directly from Paletta. As far as the name I have given it, there is nothing uncreditable about it! Greystoke is just a name of Tarzan, and a village in Cumbria England. I do not plan on selling this piece or even trading it. I am not some fancy coral namer, these names are given to corals by reefers who see these names in them. I feel pretty confident that Mike Paletta would like this name.

I guess if you're going to name it just to name it then to each their own. I just get P.O.ed when reefer try to pass off or sell something with a falsified name. A good example is the G.A.R.F Bonsai acro. Many reefers seem to think if it is purple and green it must be that.

Is there a connection or meaning behind Greystoke the name of Tarzan, and a village in Cumbria England?

No real connection to either of them. I guess that is just what I thought of when I stare at this piece. After futher research last night I think I have narrowed it down to Acropora Simplex. I am not sure but the corallites have the same charecteristics. If anyone can tell me if I have mis-identified this acro please do so. THANK YOU

Greystoke is a fine name. With that being said. I think that the coral needs time to grow into it's potential to see the real quality of it. I'm not surprised you couldn't find any kind of scientific reference or species name. Even experts have a hard time determining species and require skeleton analysis in many cases. Taking a picture of a small frag that can pretty much look like most typical acro out there is not justification it's some sort of unique coral just because it came from Paletta (if it really did). As someone mentioned before, which I agree, it does not serve the hobby to be naming something that has not been determined if it's anything of worth. Looks like it could be a A. Valida or Stag to me. Give us an update 3-6 months from now with optimal care of this coral, who knows, maybe it will turn out to be something special.

The corals I keep have kept me happy for so many years. The thought of this corals potential only excites my passion for this lifestyle even more. I cannot justify calling this a hobby any longer, for me it's a lifestyle and I eat drink sleep reefing. Today has been a very tough day, it is my Mom and Dads anniversary of thier passing. My father died 28 years ago today and my Mom passed 2 years ago today. I went to the cemetary and visited them and my Grandma's she passed away 2 years ago yesterday. The point of all this is that the corals I have or obtain hold a ton of value to me, they keep me cheered up and positive.
even when something goes wrong.

I would comfortably wager that it is not A. Simplex. Given the different growth from the base to the tips, I think you need to wait a bit and get some growth to get more definition of the coral. And then once you've got some growth then see what unique characteristics the coral has.

I have to agree with BigOldReef. It can be exciting to see what becomes of a new frag but it can dramatically change (hopefully for the better). I've received a browned out acro that i swore looked like an 4" slab of efflo. I glued it to and edge to plate out, and branched come out of it and it is green and blue. Turns out is is Loripes. A completely different acro.

Check this thread out that is going on now and you'll see what i mean.

That is defiantly not a simplex, not even close...I hate to let you down but giving that coral a name at this point makes no sense....it has nothing that stands out....IMO it looks like a browned out frag...my advice is to let it grow out for at least 6 months, then come back and see if what you have is different then anything out there....my guess is that Mike Paletta was probably just selling some frags of random stuff at the swap and this one was really no different then any other stag out there, so he never gave it a name for a reason. Don't get caught up in all the naming BS, just sit back and enjoy your coral....naming makes no sense unless you has something special. Here is a pic of 2 of my simplex, the green and the purple so you can compare.
