New Golden Puffer

For the past month my gf and I have been looking at this 10" golden puffer (Arothron Meleagris) at our LFS where I usually get my fish from. She really loves this cute little guy but eventually we decided not to get it. On Sunday she said she wanted to go look at the puffer one last time, so we to the LFS. The moment we walked in the store owner asked me if I was going to buy it, and said someone was going to come in three days to pick him up. At that moment my gf had a mental breakdown and had tears in her eyes... and asked me "can we buy him?" lol... so here he is sitting in my QT. I really love this guy! He even eats pellets too!

nice puffer.

do they generally not eat pellets at all? i was telling my LFS guy about how one of my angels refuse to eat pellets. he then told me about the puffers at the restaurant where he started up and maintenance their tank. he said he had even got the puffers to eat pellets.

It can depend a lot on personality and species. Even Tobies (which I've found are some of the least picky puffers) have the potential to be rather stubborn. Some puffers are pigs that'll eat anything you give them. Others will throw a tantrum if it isn't fresh fish/shrimp/mussels/clams.

Awesome puffer but I never get the someone is going to buy it if you dont saying sounds like a car salesman imo...

yeah i think it depends on the individual fish itself. i had one that would not eat pellets at all but would chow down all the seafood lol...

yeah if it were any other LFS i would say it's just a car salesman speech, but the owner is a personal friend of mine so i trust her.

do the black dog-face puffers not get as big? i'm seeing them listed everywhere at 13" max... so maybe 10" in the aquarium?

the next time DD gets a black dogface i will pursue it.

This is a different species if I remember correctly and the color morph only shows after it reaches a pretty significant size (7" or so).

That is correct. Dog-faced puffers usually get to around a foot in the wild, so maybe around 8-10" in the aquarium? Arothron meleagris (the gold puffer species) gets to 20" in the wild. I have no idea how big it'll get to in captivity, but I'll guess 14-15" in a 200-300 gallon tank.

DD just had a soloman black dog-faced puffer last week. I forgot how much but think it's $160 or so. I love the black one too.

i have been thinking about getting one of these guys for myself. i think they are awesome. i like porcupines and the goldens. thats about it for puffers.

GRATZ...

On the pellet food, my dogface eats them when I feed the damsels. DD had a few nice puffers on there email list the last few weeks.Looks like they were quickly bought up.

Have fun.

Thx. DD just had a golden puffer a couple of days ago and it was gone in one night.

My gf can't stop looking at our puffer!

Yep..the Golden one was gone the same day. I had a spotted puffer morph into gold stage. That was about 20 years ago.

I know they recommend no copper for puffers. But other info I have seen, is using Cupermine half dose. With there test kit.

what is your QT plan for it? i've read a lot of mix reports about copper use on puffers.

After killing my last yellow dog-faced puffer under 0.4ppm cupramine, i decided not to copper this one. i currently have it under prazipro only and just gonna observe it for a few weeks. if any signs of ich shows up, i will hypo it.

btw, do you guys know if ocellaris and percula clowns will be safe with the puffer? they are still small ~ 1.5". puffer is 10".
