New Gorg

Check out my new gorg for my SH tank. I've had it about a month now and it's been opening nicely. The LFS I got it from, go two, they still have the other one and it never opens. Anyway, it's pretty cool and I thought I would share.

BTW, that's a blue leg hermit camped out on it. I haven't seen the SHs hitch to it, but that's OK, the color breaks up some of the green from the caulerpa prolifera in the tank.

I'm not sure yet, it has opened since day one with and without lighting. I've been trying to accurately ID it, the closest I can find is the California Golden Gorgonian, which is a deep water gorg and therefore less light dependant. I also suspect this species as the LFS it came from gets Christmas Tree frags, which is a deep water coral of recent news off the coast of California as well.

So far it seems to be doing well, but only time will tell I suppose.

That gorgonian comes from Jakarta. I will have to go through some of my invoices and see what scientific name they have on it and post it. That doesn't mean that it will be the right scientific name just the one that my exporter uses.

if your tank is pretty well stocked you may not need to feed, but most gorg are not photosynth...
I am not sure that is really an accurate statement. From what I read in my corals book (by Eric Borneman), gorgonians are pretty well split into 2 categories - some that are photosythetic and those that are not-at-all photosynthetic and require good feeding. There is no real leaning in either direction. However, if things are working for you and you are not target feeding this sucker, I would say this is probably a photosynthetic gorgonian.

Speaking of gorgonians, you know that Green Star Polyps have recently been relabelled as an encrusting (photosynthetic) gorgonian?
