New hatch

I love pix too, but not tonight. Suffice it to say that they all have nice crisp white head bands and some are working on the middle band.

It is day 8,( counting the day after the night of hatching as day 1).

Usually I don't see white headbands until day 9 with my friend's broodstock and day 11 for mine.

This is really very nice! Next hatch is Wednesday night....

My day 6 clownfish larvae give every sign that they will be sporting white headbands when I get home this evening. Pale headbands on some of them this morning, and a whole lot of tail curling going on.

I think it is the temperature. They are at 83 this time, so maybe a little slower than the previous hatch at 84 that had an early meta. I am using the same thermometer, so I can compare the two temperatures and say if they are the same or not. I have found some lack of accuracy in the cheap hobby thermometers I buy. I will try to post pictures of the 6 day larvae soon .

I think that Edgar has some information on temperature and metamorphosis, he mentioned something once in another post, but he has not been around for a couple of days...

As with all coldblooded animals temperature directly affects metabolism. (ya-ya, we mostly all knew that) I believe it's the same ratio for spawning, hatching and meta; one day for every two degrees Fred.

Thanks! Isn't it amazing what growth can occur in 7 days and then 11 days? the difference in the two consecutive hatches is incredible!

What's up with "tail curling" ? Not something I ever noticed or paid any attention to, what does it mean?

They can be swimming along, and suddenly stop the back and forth motion of the tail, pause and curl the tail to one side for a second or two. In my experience, which is limited, they do it just at the beginning of metamorphosis. I think it is indicative of the discomfort they feel when their intestines grow and kink. This intestinal growth phenomenon is at least partly responsible for the deepening of their bodies at metamorphosis.
