New improved picture taking

We got a new camera a couple weeks ago. It's not much, but better than we've had before. I decided to try taking some pics using a few tips I'd read online -- use a tripod, timer, etc. WOW, what a difference in the quality. Here are a few I took this morning.
Frogspawn frag I got from Will on Saturday

Pavona maldives I got from Dave last week

Here's a green sinularia I've had for years. Started as a pinky sized frag someone gave me.

Here's a favid I scored from CRA a few weeks ago.

Got these candy canes at the first Chattanooga swap

A few dragon eye zoas, with others mixed in. This was the second coral I ever purchased. Had it almost 6 years.

So, what do ya think?

Except for the spot of green coraline on the glass in the lower middle of this shot, I thought it turned out pretty good too.

Well, like I said I just followed a few tips I'd read. I've had a tripod for years, but only used it with the video camers. Using it, taking pictures with the camera's timer instead of mashing the button, and shooting straight on, instead of at an angle.... They're still not the best in the world, but these are easily the best pics I've ever taken of coral.

Thanks for the validation Ricky. The camera is just a FujiFilm J10 -- $89 at Best Buy. Hand held it can take crummy pictures too, but using the tripod and timer really made a difference.

The biggest problem I have is getting the auto focus to focus in on close up shots. I will give the tripod and timer a try this evening. I have a Polaroid i630 that I use for work.

Also, do you turn the flow off? That helps a lot, esp. with close ups. What kind of camera are you using?

Mariner, Wow! I'm impressed with your pics. I want to learn how to takes pics and post them. We have a couple of digital cameras laying around here. Can someone help me figure out how to do it, even though I really don't have anything to show off at this point. It would have been nice to know how to post a pic of our "marine critter", which is probably a stomatella. My son posts pics to My Space, but I know nothing about it. Sadly, he doesn't have time or at least want to take the time to teach me to do it. Is this a short learning curve or complicated and time consuming? If it's complicated, I better wait until I'm out of college next month, before I try to learn. Thanks!

To post a picture:
1) Take the picture. ;)
2) Save it to your computer.
3) Open an account on Photobucket.com (or a similar image storage site -- the account is free)
4) Upload your pic to Photobucket.com (your photobucket page will have a box that says "Upload Images & Video" In that box there's a button that says "Choose files". This enables you to choose your picture file that you saved on your computer in step 2.
5) Once your picture is in your Photobucket album, place your mouse on it and you'll see a drop down menu with various codes you can copy for different purposes.
6) Copy the IMG code at the bottom of the list
7) Paste that code into your post on ReefCentral -- it'll show up as your picture when you post.
HTH (hope that helps)

Mariner, thanks! That sounds easy enough. I think I need a dictionary for chat acronyms. I wonder if one exists? lol
