Hello everyone, I'm David, and my girlfriend Becky joined GIRS last night.

I read Reef Central every day, so I figured I'd make our introduction here so I could follow the thread.

When I was a boy and in high school, my dad used to import saltwater fish and rock from the gulf. We had over a thousand gallons of saltwater in the basement, along with my bedroom. My dad also worked a seasonal job that took him out of town, so as you can imagine, I ended up caring for a very great variety of these creatures when I was young.

When I moved out, I left all that behind me, and my love for it forgotten for almost 10 years until I met my girl Becky, who loves saltwater stuff as well. We set up a few tanks together, and I remembered how much it meant to me, so now we're back in it together, for good.

That was about 6 months ago. The science sure has evolved a lot since I was a boy! I've enjoyed reading about it a great deal, and I've been collecting the things I've learned and writing about them on a new saltwater website that I've called Frugal Reef. I'm an embeded product designer, and I do a lot of web development in my line of work, so putting together a website about my hobbies is a natural progression for me. Working on the website has also given rise to an interest in aquarium photography, and I've been getting better at it every day.

Just recently Becky and I put together a new tank that we plan on getting serious with, a 150 tall. You can look it over on my saltwater blog at hinkle.blogs.frugalreef.com

We also wanted to become involved in the local saltwater community, so I asked Adam up at aquatic environments what was around and he said I should look into GIRS.

We look forward to attending our first event!

Well, I wouldn't really say that I have a lot of experience. Haha, mostly what I remember from being a kid was bringing girlfriends downstairs and throwing frozen shrimp into say, a tub of moray eels to watch the eels, and the girls jump. Have you ever seen when happens when you feed a tub full of moray eels? The food, and all the water, and all the eels, becomes mostly suspended in air 2 or 3 feet above the tank.

The saltwater in the basement was run on two separate systems. One one plumbed through a bunch of rubber maid tubs that held mostly live rock and one tub full of eels.

The other system was plumbed into about 20 or 30 acrylic holding tanks for the cool creepy crawlies from the gulf. I don't remember us having much fish, even though I know we did. Mostly what I remember is the inverts, which I liked the best.

Cool background story and Welcome!!! I am glad to see Adam is pushing the club. I know we send a lot of business his way also. :D You are lucky to be near one of the best stores in the midwest.

Yea, Adam is great, him and one of his guys delivered my new tank and all the water to my house, and even plumbed it for me. All I had to do was set up the electrical.

I'm very pleased with his service, and probably quite spoiled. Every other saltwater store I've been to I always ask myself why anybody would want to do business there!

As a matter of fact, something you may find interesting, my Dad was actually working with Adam when he was importing from the gulf and was involved in helping Adam with his first store.
