new MH light making a burning smell

Hi,

I've installed a new Aquamedic 3*250 hqi + 4 T5 ocean light and when the MH lights came on the 1st time there was a faint "burning in" kind of smell. Well 3 days (only maybe 6 or 7 hrs of actual ON time) later and it is still there.

Anyone have any experiance with this?

Thanks

I wouldnt use them untill you find the cause. I've heard of peoples houses almost catching fire because of it, but I heard that from people who bought from aquatraders.com because of the magnetic balists. Be carefull and good luck.

Just an observation: When I got my MH/ballast setup running for the first time, there was a light lingering smell of burn. I eventually found out it was the magnetic ballasts causing it due to industrial grease/oil on the metal parts. Now, 6 months later, nothing to smell and still running fine.

Have you heard anything about Aquatraders new line up with electronic ballast? I know the same rule applies "you get what you pay for" but the 72 inch 1010w halide set up for $500 bucks is a really good deal....as long as it isn't going to burn my house down....

I couldnt find the 72 inch fixture? But that would be a great price.

And yes those fixtures have history, although I have the 36 inch with no problems..

The smell is going away, I've given the whole thing a once-over and AM stated that it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks all for the feedback
