I have had various freshwater tanks for the past four years and I am now wanting to make the jump to a saltwater reef tank. I originally wanted a 72 gallon bowfront, but unfortunately price is a factor. Now, I think a 24g nanocube would better suit my needs. Any suggestions would be appreciated: good beginners corals, possible fish, number of fish, pounds of live rock, adjustments to tank, prices, etc.

Take you time on the nano. The smaller the size of your ecosystem, the greater the risk factor.....if anything goes out of whack, it'll effect the systems faster then it would if you had say...a 300 gallon tank. Good beginners corals would be softies, i.e. shrooms, maybe some finger leathers..even a Yellow Fiji leather would be good...maybe some Xenia...
fish...gobies, etc...look for fish that will max out size at 1~1.5inch.
maybe get a cleaner shrimp....a couple of hermits...

I've found a few fun and colorful fish to keep: bi-colored blenny (Ecsenius bicolor), Six Line Wrasse
(Pseudocheilinus hexataenia), and a Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) As for invertebrates, a Cleaner Shrimp
(Lysmata amboinensis) and some Dwarf Blue Leg Hermit Crab (Clibanarius tricolor).
You shouldn't keep more than 3 to a tank of that size of any fish really. The six line wrasse might be the only issue since they can potentially grow up to 4".
