New Seahorse Tank...

I am going to start a 2.5 gallon dwarf seahorse tank in the next couple days... anybody have anything to tell me that could help me a little bit??

Are they easy to care for??? i read on seahorse.org that dwarfs are the easiest to care for of all the seahorses...

I find quite the opposite. I don't mind hatching the bbs, but if the dwarves you get are not CB then they are very prone to disease and dreaded parasites.. You also have the possibility of getting hydroids with dwarves and the hydroids are very difficult to get rid of (short of using Pancur sp?). Also since dwarf seahorses are kept in such small tanks, water quality is harder to keep up. You also have to watch all filter intakes when you have fry or smaller dwarves. They can get caught very easily in filter intakes (esp. fry). I find my Erectus to be much easier to care for but that's JMO.

the only reason i am getting dsh is cause its such a small tank... one day i plan on getting a nano for bigger seahorses... whenever i have the money to do that anyways lol... i have already paid $1600 for my 46 bowfront and i dont even have a fish yet lol

It used to be thought that dwarfs were a good beginner seahorse. However, that has been proven false in recent years.

Yes dwarfs can be kept in a small tank, but small tanks are a nightmare when it comes to keeping them stable. Any flucuation in parameters is going to happen quickly and that is not good. The extremely high feeding density required and small tank size create a whole set of problems.

Also dwarfs require constant hatching of live brine shrimp. It is just about impossible to get them to take frozen food with any regularity. They will need a constant supply of live foods.

Everything they said is true. I hatch brine every day and have an ongoing battle with algae & cyno (partly due to low water flow). I've never had a problem with water quality though. We change about 50% every two weeks. To me it doesn't really seem like that much work. I'm hatching brine for the big seahorse fry anyway and if you're going to raise fry.. the dwarves are way easier then the others... you don't have to do a thing!
If you start with CB seahorses and prepare for the hydroid problem ( I just nuke everything with panacur right up front) - the rest is just hatching that brine.

i am doing a 5.5g instead of a 2.5g.... i already have the sand and the filter in the tank... now im just waiting for the seahorses...

im gunna use the 2.5 as a pico tank... ill have seahorses in the 5.5 soon... and ill post pictures and updates as i get them

Is your filter sponge cycled yet? When did you set up the tank, and when do you expect the seahorses to arrive? Where are you getting them from?

i am getting them from the LFS... they are captive bred and are eating frozen mysid shrimp.... i decided to not get the dwarf seahorses since i got a little bit bigger tank now... the tank has been set up for 4 days now... i had the water tested today and its not ready yet... ill have pix of the tank in my gallery before the end of today... so check and they will be there... plus i got new stuff for my 46 bowfront and i will be adding those pix too....

Please tell us you're not planning to put these seahorses in the 5.5 gallon. The 5.5 would ONLY be appropriate for dwarves.

i know a guy that has had seahorses since he was 9 years old... they were his very first pet and hes like 40 now and he told me i can keep regular seahorses in it... he actually said i can keep 2 pair in it... but i only want 1 pair
