New Snails in hiding

I acclimated my 3 new snails and 1 micro hermit using the 1/4-1/2 cup method every 10-15 mins over a span of 3 hours. Placed them in the tank. 1 snail is cruising around, 2 are hiding in their shells and the hermit (REALLY micro) is grazing away. Are the 2 hiding in their shells goners, or is this somewhat normal?

probably is due to stress. dumping in water isn't the best method of acclimation IMO, but it can work fine. I'd give em a day or two to see if they start moving around on their own. If not, then I'd worry and check to make sure their still alive. What type of snails are these?

okay then, follow the original recommendation of just waiting a day or so to see if they perk up. Chance they may have just been uber stressed from the acclimation or tranport. I've had trochus do the same thing, just sit their for awhile before they decide to start moving again. Buy just for kicks, what are your water parameters running currently? Snails are inverts and can get a little uneasy with unoptimal water quality. Any ammonia or nitrite will be toxic to them, severaly high nitrates and phosphtae levels won't be good for em either. If all 4 of these are running 0 as they should be, then I'd personally chalk it up to just acclimation stress.

Definatly get the phosphate test kit, that will really start to come in handy with various problem diagnosis, as well as being one of those things you need to know when dealing with certain coral/invert species. But judging from the rest of the readings, pretty decent. Can't complain about what ya listed.

I checked them this evening, those 2 snails didn't make it. :( The other one seems fine though and the crab is very active. I would like to keep the 2 shells from those snails for the crab, what should I do with them? Let them rot away in the tank, or clean them out somehow.

If you have a good strong biofiltration setup (lots of rock, big skimmer, etc) you should be able to leave them in and it won't cause a spike.

If you feel uneasy about it, I've "cleaned" out dead snail shells in the past with a long wooden "shish-kabob" skewer. It's a pretty nasty/smelly way to go about it, though. Definitely made me feel a little queezy. If you've got bristleworms or hermits in the tank, they should take care of it.
