New tank / cycle questions

Hey Reefers,

So as per my previous posts, I swapped out my sand last week as I had started it off with play sand. I only had it in for a day. Now my tank has 40 lb of aragonite and 60 lb of live sand with 70 lb of live rock.

The issue is I cracked my eruobrace while removing the "bad sand" and I currently only have about 8" of water in the tank, just enough to cover the rock. I also have a small power head in there for circulation. I know that the cycle has started as I had traces of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates a few days ago.

My question that when I install my new brace (next weekend) and fill up the tank will I have to cycle the tank again or will it be good to go; assuming that Ammonia and Nitrites are at 0?

Yes its a new system so U are going to have to test water in order to know when cycling has finished.

If the cycle already started, it should be continuing while the rock is in saltwater. You'll want to test, of course, to make sure all ammonia and nitrites are gone before adding livestock. I'm sure someone here would suggest you add more ammonia and watch for the level to go back to zero to be sure everything is hunky-dory. Depends on how risk-adverse you are.

Thanks. Yes I will of course test before adding any live stock. I was just curious if add new saltwater to the already cycled water that's in there would merit another cycle. I'n not really inclined to throw money down the drain.

Nope! The water itself is irrelevant. The bacteria is on the surfaces.
