New tank in West Bend

Hello!

I'm in West Bend and I'm preparing to setup a new SW reef tank.

I just discovered this forum and it looks like its going to be a terrific resource.

I've had freshwater forever and a nano tank for about 2 years.
We're now building out our basement and I have room for a built-in 210G system and I'm also fortunate enough that it backs up to a furnace room that I can put all my mechanicals in.

Now I know freshwater and nano experience doesn't qualify me to engineer a 210G reef system! So, I'm looking for some professional help and design/equipment suggestions from a community like this.

Aquatics Unlimited is going to be quoting setting this up (as is another individual recommended by Pet Stuff here in West Bend), but I know AQ is VERY expensive.

Does anyone have suggesions on how to engineer this setup and/or which LFS to work with?

i live in kenosha and sometimes go up to milwaukee to check out the cool fish stores
personally the only place i actually bought livestock from is aqua exhibits on MLK
i was impressed by thier selection although the store itself is kind of ghetto
i guess it just appealed to me b/c when i go into a place like hoffer's or aquatics unlimited i feel like im paying for all those kick butt displays
i work in pet retail so i understand overhead and those places must have insane costs to consider
if you can afford it
i say support those businesses
i however am poor so i tend to shop where i get the best
perceived value

do it yourslef. save a ton of cash..

you know, if you were to become a WRS member (10 bucks) I am sure you woudl have a ton of help.

not that you wont get it otherwise:)

Where do I sign up?

i believe you may be thinking of marineland on villard
Hoffers is on 76 and good hope i think?????
I know the full name is Hoffer's Tropic Life Pets
fun place to LOOK

I like Hoffers but they are also VERY expensive.

I haven't been to Marineland in over a year, but if I remember right, in the back of the store, they had an adult alligator about 6' long in custom acrylic tank that I think was about 2000G size.

Of course the sign did say that they him out on a regular basis for expercise :)

Yes, the website is still out of date. Dues are $10.

Did some testing with Ryan on a new Website, liked some features, didn't others. Waiting for him to get back to me on a final resolution...

Re: New tank in West Bend

Some general points here.

1. very few pet stores carry everything out there that would be number one choice in a product. Even working with the four largest wholesalers in a 200 mile radius of Milwaukee they do not carry everything you realy need.

2. Regardless who you pick to do your set up they will push the products they carry..... Regardless if they are the best for your application or not.

3. You may get a deal on a full set up however if you end up replacing things shortly afterwards the deal is no longer a deal.

4. Build your knowledge base up. Ask questions and way several peoples answer to them. Then make your own decisions. Based on what you want and what you can afford.

5. You can easly spend 10K on a 210 gallon set up, however depending upon what your tastes are you could have gotten something just as good for 3K and siumply have the other 7K spent on things you will not need.

6. Patience.... Patience.... Patience..... Reading are the four things that seperate a succesful reefer from sopmeone that hangs it up 6 months later.

Thank you for your thoughts- I couldn't agree more.
In fact, the reason I'm asking the questions here is that no matter how good and helpful of a LFS I select, I don't want to be steered strictly to the products they happen to carry.

Over the past several weeks, I have been learning a ton. I'm now actually CONSIDERING setting it up myself.

One of the things I'm still most confused about is how all the components get plumbed and in what sequence, etc.

Does anyone have "blueprints" of how they put together their reef system?

I'd be happy to lead you through my set-up - just bring a 6-pack and a few hours of your time.

I think taking a look at some larger systems (like 120-gallons and more - especially ones larger than yours too) will give you a little insight into what general concepts to think about, and what methods you want to go for...

If you're interested just send me a PM and I'll give you my contact info
