New tank plumbing

I am just about to set up a 36"x18"x18" all glass tank with a sump. I have never used a sump before and dont know where to drill for the flow or return pipework. Could you please help and give advise with photographs if at all possible please.

I have seen the durso standpipes and heard people that use them say they are good.

What size holes do I need?

Do I get the base of the tank drilled?

Where does the return pipe go, in the back of the tank wall?

Where do I start!!!!!!

Wow. You've got a lot of questions. I'll start with the holes. Check the following link to marinedepot. This will take you to their bulkheads section. There is a table for hole sizes for various bulkheads:

Getting the bottom of the tank drilled is a question of whether the bottom is made with tempered glass or not. There also a preference between bottom and back drilling.

The return pipe doesn't have to be drilled. The advantage is if it's bottom drilled then the tank can go right against the back wall.

The only advantage a durso gives is it's quiet. Very worthwhile.

Where to start. Honestly I would read stuff here on reef central and possibly buy book or two(I never did) for several months. There are a lot of issues and a lot of tradeoffs for whatever you do. Patience is one of every reefers greatest assets.
