New tank questions

I've been reading this forum for a while now and finally have my first sw tank set up and 1 week into my cycle.

My ammonia peaked at 3ppm two days ago and has dropped to 1, my nitrites are around 5ppm and I expect that to start dropping over the next couple of days.

I have some weird things one of the pieces of LR, I think it's alive because they seam to point for the lights? What are they so I can read up on them?

Secondly I have brown stuff on my sand and LR, I just want to confirm this is Diatom Bloom.

aiptasia, bad, lots of ways to kill them... kalk paste, joe's juice, etc. Google will tell you all you need to know.
Certainly looks like diatoms to me.

I've taken that one rock out (it was at the top) and placed it in some fresh water for a few days. I saw two others on another piece and have blasted that with Red Sea Aiptasia-X.

I'll post my wins/fails in 4-6 weeks.
